Going to Hawaii for first time and would like to watch some big-wave surfers. Is February a good time?

If you want to see big surf go earlier in the winter like November and December. There are a lot more frequent swells coming in November, early December.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing waiting period starts November 12 - December 20. The Triple Crown consists of OP Pro (Nov. 12 - 22, 2006), O'Neill World Cup of Surfing (Nov 24 - Dec 6, 2006) and The Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Master (Dec 8 - 20, 2006). The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, a big wave riding contest, held in surf larger than 20' (translating to wave face heights of more than 30 feet), starts their waiting period in December and ends in the end of February. But this contest has been held only 7 times since its inception in 1985.

February is a great time. The waves start to pick up in November and die down in March. Don't get me wrong, other months of the year have large waves, but you just can't beat those Winter swells.

That would be a perfect time to go and see some big wave riders. The winter swells should becoming around that time to couple months before. Winter Season is perfect.

February is excellent! The waves are largest on the north shore in the winter months.
