i am also a very slow reader myself. I also need to improve my reading speed a lot. Other than reading more and practice speed reading sessions, I really don't know the ways to improve your reading speed. I apologize.

The most important requirement is to decide what info you need to get from the document before you read it. If you need an overview you can read faster than if you need to understand and retain minute details.
Most of us learn to read letter by letter, then word by word, but fewer of us take the next step and train ourselves to read blocks of words at a time. To speed read you need to increase the # of words you can read in each block.
Reading never progresses smoothly from left to right. Our eyes are constantly flickering back to a wrod to recheck meaning. While this is normal, excessive regression is inefficient and has been shown to reduce comprehension and speed. Consciously reduce how much your eyes regress. This can be done initially by running a paper line by line down the page, above the line of print you read. Or you can your finger down the page faster than you would normally read and try to keep up with it.
Also, you may or may not be aware that you are doing it, but many people sound the words out in their throts or say them mentally. This slows down reading considerably. Instead, just think the words, rather than speak or hear them.
Hope this helps and good luck to you.

Try what is called chunking. It involves looking at a group of words, maybe four or five at a time and absorbing those together. It just takes practice to master.

Old Moose said it right.
Also, try jotting page number on your bookmark and look up unfamiliar words later. This lets you read on, uninterrupted, so you don't lose the context of your reading matter.
