I figure maybe a snake bit him but could not fine where. He was swell up some but not bad.Can a snake kill a full grown pit in 4 hours? This is number 3.And all of them was doing fine only hours before I found them dead.I have 3 more and would loved to no what to do to protect them. My wife said maybe a heat stroke but they are tied up with alot of trees to shade them and alot of water. any help would greatly consider and try. thanks before hand for any information anyone can give me. rick.

It may be poisoning...sad, but true. Many people dislike the breed without ever knowing one personally. It could be rat poisin or antifreeze. I am truly sorry for your loss, whatever the circumstances.

As another thought, you may want to contact the manufacturer of your dog's food. We had a scare at our kennel. Diamond's brand had an outbreak of a bacterium that killed 70+ dogs in 3 days in our region. Go to their website and look for any news on your brand. Good luck!!

First let me say I am truly sorry for the loss of so many of your pets. Have you considered poison from a neighbor? I know how cruel that sounds but it can happen. Also, have you had any puppies around any of your dogs? I have personal lost several dogs that was no longer puppies but the vet said that the still died of parvo even with the shots that were given when they were puppies. I must ask did your dogs have fleas? If your dogs had lots of fleas you can check their gums and if they are white, what has happened is that the fleas have drain to much blood from the dog and this can happen over a view days without you noticing but, then they just fall dead. I hope you find the answer fast before you have any additional loss.

It sounds like it's very possible it was heat stroke or a similiar heat related injury. I'm not sure where you live, but still, the heat index across the united states is close to almost 95 degrees nation wide. I know in maryland, if I leave any of my dogs out for more than 1 hour, they are dehydrated to no end. So I'd advise bringing them in if possible, and otherwise, try and get a fan and a tent covering or something similar, and also get them lots of water, and make sure they drink the water. If the water level isn't going down, then you really must force them to drink or bring them in. This should work, or at least I hope it helps, for the sake of the dogs and your health. You should also remember to drink lots of water too.

its really hard to say without being there to see him. i mean, yeah some poisonous snakes can, but mostly snakes try to avoid confrontation with things bigger than they are, and unless you live in a snake prone area, there aren't many in urban areas that are poisonous because of development and things like that. in general, pits are one of the most feared and least liked dogs out there. many people hate the breed without even knowing one. someone could have poisoned your dogs, but i'm sure that they would have barked or something to alert you to strangers in there yard. if you don't see any visible bite marks, or any holes, blood or vomit around where the dog was at, then it might be worth having a necropsy done by a vet (this is the animal version of an autopsy). you'll find out what, if any toxins are in it's body, and they can tell you how to avoid it happening to the rest of them. sorry for you loss and i hope this helps.

Well first of all, that is not an APBT, AST, or a SBT. That is an American Bulldog, completely different. Nowhere in the article does it say that it was a "pit bull type dog" Second of all, medium to large sized dogs of all breeds and mixes can maul and kill, given the wrong kind of breeding, socialization, training, and ownership. Bully breeds and Molosser breeds are powerful and strong, which means that when they attack, they cause a lot of damage. ANY dog that attacks and kills a human needs to die. Period. I don't care if it's a Lab, or a "pit bull type dog", it needs to be removed from the gene pool.

Could be a snake bite but I would not think there would be 3 dogs to die from snakebites in 3 weeks. Maybe someone poisoned them, someone who hates pits? So sorry for your loss. I would definitely have a necropsy(animal autopsy) done. That way you will know for sure what is going on.

i'm very sorry for your loss . if i were you i would take to my vet about getting blood or even do an autopsy to find out if your dog was poisoned if it were one dog i could see but 3 dogs in 5 weeks i would be suspicious . do you have any enemies that don't like you having your dogs around sounds to me like some kind of poison such as rat or even anti freeze since you said there was some swelling. there has to be something in the area they are in that is doing this it could be a coincidence but highly unlikely good luck if you find anything out let me know again i'm very sorry for the loss of your 3 dogs

Do you have any kind of poison around that your dogs could get into? Do your dogs get regular vet care? Do you have a neighbor that dislikes you dogs because of their breed? Some people think pits are bad dogs, maybe they were poisoned on purpose. If it happens again I would suggest you have the dog tested for toxins.

I am sorry for your losses...

I would take one for an autopsy. It sounds suspicious, and that breed is often feared by others. Hopefully, to keep the local peace, it is a predator. I may be totally wrong! At the very least, keep them indoors/in a different area for a few weeks, and monitor their water and food bowls for 'visitors'.

Take care.
