Cardio, cardio, and more cardio first. Cardio burns the fat that may be around your midsection. You could do 2 million situps and crunches a day, but if there's any extra body fat, then it will simply cover up all of your hard work. Situps and crunches of course burns calories, but cardio burns more. Once the fat is gone, the results from any situps and crunches will definately show.
I also suggest Pilates. It's AMAZING. If your budget is restricted, try going to Amazon.com. They have many new and used Pilates DVDs for very low and reasonable prices.
I just got a new DVD a couple of weeks ago from Walmart. It's a double-DVD set by Shelly McDonald. It was only $5.50. It's fantastic and focuses on the core.
Good luck!

do this standing up press the abd rectus muscle just below the belly button with one hand and the other hand behind your back now push the muscle towards the spine and hold x20cts and let go. do this everyday for about 10 min. sev times during the day and you'll see the difference. this central muscle is hard to be targetted, with other exercises. do this while driving or lying in bed. before sleep... crunches also help in a bicycling motion... the best is sex,it defines this muscle when used in conjunction with the other muscles a woman uses during sex.

What is the most important thing is your diet.
I eliminated soda altogether, even diet soda. I drink lots of water.
Sit up's are nice, but I found by running, walking and bike riding helps too. Some of the things I do is run 5 to 6 days a week. If you cant run just walk. You will be fine.

8 minute abs!!! lay on the ground and bend your knees. interlock your hands and push down between your legs. Do this about 20-40 times. Then repeat reps when you want. Its the best one for that region.

first, you need to do a lot of cardio.. running.. using the machines.. do that for like an hour a day.. you have to burn the fat first.. then you can do the ab work outs to tone it.. .. use the big ball for crunches, and use the ab machines.

pilates sit ups are very good for that. lay down on a mat. it's like you are going to do a sit up, but you come up only half way, and twist to the side . it is very helpful
