Because they were painted by "artistic" people who had both navels and limited capacity for logical reasoning. They are also always painted as caucasian, for which there is no basis for assumption in the bible to my knowledge.

First of all,most often than not, there were models used by the artist.Secondly, the knowledge that Adam and his mate were created,is an acknowledgment of faith that what was revealed,was the truth from God.And to seek out the answer as to whether or not they had navels is not.

That's a very good question...I guess because artists overlooked that part of the Bible and painted two regular humans as they would imagine them to be. They weren't considering the little physical details. And Ignore condescending remarks by ancient arrogant people.

That's a great question, and I guess the painters never considered that! I always see them portrayed as too modern looking. It'd be interesting to see what they really looked like. I bet they had perfect skin, without all the polution and stuff that we have now...?
