It depends what parts of your body are swelling and your age.. If its your face around your eyes there is a condition known as "nephrotic syndrome" when your kidneys loose protein. You don't really have "kidney failure" but your urine has protein in it.
If its only your feet and ankles, there is a system in your body known as the 'lymph system" which can allow fluid to move into the body tissues if it is not working correctly- some medications may help correct this.
Further swelling may be caused by an allergic reaction.
my advice would be to go back to your Dr. or if he is unable to help you-- get a second opinion.
Good luck.

i have just recently recovered from a bout of "ascites" which, in effect, is swelling of the abdomen due to fluid in the abdominal cavity. there are several causes, among them being heart disease, hypertension, adrenal adenoma, or blockage if the kidney. further, as the distention of the abdomen increases, so does the constipation from the pressure on the bowells and intestines. this greatly compounds the distention, pain, and swelling...a catch 22. in my case, it turned out to be a result of a overly large kidney stone blocking the left kidney. urgent care, emergency room all missed the call on this one. my family physician of 30 yrs. knew my history and immediately sent me for x-rays and ultrasound...which proved her suspicions...
hope this helps to give you something to consider.

body swelling maybe caused by the lymphatic system responsible for your lymp nodes...
edema also is a factor..
body swelling is not a disease its just like FEVER... it is the bodies natural ways of saying "Hey Master somethings wrong with me" it is also considered to be a normal body defense mechanism in order for the body to compensate with the abnormality present..
