Yes bed bugs are very real. There really hasn't been a problem with bed bugs since WW II due to better hygiene. However they do exist and they are parasites that feed on blood. If there isn't human blood available they will feed on warm-blooded animals.
If you think you have bed bugs look for blood looking stains on your sheets and mattress. These stains are mainly caused by crush bed bugs.
They are virtually harmless so to say but if you are bitten by these bed bugs you may experience hard whitish whelps that are in rows of three. Just like any insect bite scratching leads to infection.
Just be sure to wash and change your sheets frequently (once a week). I would also suggest vacuuming your mattress and flipping it to prevent these pests.

They are wrong. Bedbugs do exist and I know people who have seen them. They are particularly hard to get rid of and the house has to be fumigated to take care of them.
A piece of folklore was people travelled with pigs. The would put the pig in bed when they checked in. The bedbugs would feed on the pig and would not bother the host. This is the background behind the saying "sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite"

Yes bedbugs are real. They are on the rise in the United States. They are very hard to get rid of. If you stay in a motel and look behind the bed-board you would see carcasses if a place has been infested with them. To avoid them don't buy used furniture.

Yes they are real. They are about 1/4 an inch and reddish browna insects that eat dead blood. They are not only found in beds but in other areas of your house if present as well such as carpet and couch. They can not fly but do crawl.

They sure are! The best defense against them is to never get infested in the first place. The little suckers bite, and they're hard to kill!
