She should discuss her desire to lose weight with her doctor. He can recommend a good weight los program for her. Sufferers of MS have a lot of problems with various foods so keep an eye out for that as well.

Wow, losing weight when unable to control ones muscles is pretty tough, b/c you can't make them do the exercises! ALso realize that some of the meds she's on to keep her MS under control can cause weight gain. Any steroids (prednisone, cortizone) can caue some of that weight gain, and a round face.
If she's able, she can do leg lifts. After she does that, start adding weights to her ankles (like a 2 cans of veggies shoved into a pair of tube socks, tied together, and hung over her ankles) Do the same w/ arm curls, from her side up and even w/ her shoulders, pause, then higher, pause, come down to shoulders, pause, then back to side.
As far as her food, try to avoid buttering veggies or breads. Use light mayo, or diet margarine in a tub for veggies. Broil or bake her meats rather than pan-frying or deep-frying. And watch out for gloppy sauces; they are often high-calorie. Lowfat milk, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese... all good choices.

It is so wonderful that you want to help your grandmother with her diet and weight. Before you go too far -please check with her physician. They are available to help you with documentation, pamphlets, phone numbers of support groups and professionals who might be able to assist you. Please persue this. You want to make sure that whatever you are doing is in line with whatever treatment she might be experiencing. Arm lifts and leg lifts are simple things you can help her do -and by all means - play music! She will enjoy moving to music. Check with your local library - they may have tapes available you can check out - also the support groups for MS patients are sure to have a great number of supplies that might even be free of charge. Go for it!
