I had a baby in November 2005 and have breastfed her so far and will continue to do so until at least a year (and likely there after). I have not gotten my period back as of yet (yay) and my husband will be returning from overseas soon and I need to figure out some form of birth control. I'd like to use natural family planning, but I need something that is effective...since I haven't gotten my period back, I don't know my cycle. While browsing online, I found this website: http://familydoctor.org/126.xml which says that a doctor can give special instructions on using NFP for breastfeeding mothers...has anyone gotten that instruction? Does anyone have any thoughts about NFP effectiveness for me?

it is quite possible to conceive when you haven't had your period in awhile (happened for my husband and me- quite a shock- but happy). if you want some form of birth control, but don't want to deal with the hormones in the pills etc, try Mirena- it's an IUD (intrauterine device that doesn't have hormones) my brother is a doctor and swears by this being the best form of birth control- it's also the one that i am going to be using as soon as i pop.

your husband is in the service? tell him thanks.. we always need good men like him. my husband and my brothers are all in the air force or marines

I don't know alot about NFP but i have heard that you can determine when you are ovulating by the amount and consistancy of your secretions. I would talk to your doctor about it. Also I recommend avoiding the mini-pill because some women have supply and bleeding problems from it.

Good day, I'm Ian and I'm a student nurse...

as what i have learned from school, breastfeeding is considered to be a natural Birth Control Strat..

As long as your breastfeeding a certain hormone is being secreted in your pituitary gland. and this hormone inhibits the production of progesterone in the body causing the least chance of pregnancy.. this strategy is effective up to 6 months after child birth..

FYI
breastfeeding also helps mothers to loose weight.... for when your baby is sucking your nipple, it stimulates your pituitary gland to release oxitocin.. oxitocin is a hormone that promotes contractions... when your muscle contracts it is as if your having a great exercise.. hope it helps

:)

Please be advised that as long as you breastfed your kid your menses will not start so that way you will not be pregnant. Kids breastfed for minimum 18 months will grow up more intelligent, less sickness and more secure than those not breastfed. Furthermore, bilangual environment makes the mind of the kid grows faster = more intelligent. I know nothing about NFP but make sure that nothing passing thru your mouth can harm your milk or contaminate it or pass on to your kid!! Best wishes!!

As far as everyones told me, you cant track your cycle until it begins again. Good luck, and Im going to check out there other peoples answers too.

Natural family planning is dangerous if you don't want more children at the moment. Try the mini pill it is designed for the breastfeeding mothers
