The best you can do is a 360 i had one that had a 318 in it ,,and we changed it,,it was really tight too ,,had to jack the motor up to change the plugs in it,,you probably could go a little bigger but you would have to cut through some important sheet metal,,and it wouldn't be worth it,,i own a repair shop,,and once in a while we get a little bored and do a few engine swaps like that,,hope this help,s.

Dodge made a Dakota R/T with the 5.9 (360cu.inch) from the factory. It was a reasonably strong engine. I liked the Injected model from 97. 245 h.p. with I believe 330 lbs of torque. I put a jet chip, stainless headers, Kand N air intake system, 3" stainless duals back to a very low restrictive muffler and 3" into 4' by 8 inch dual exhaust tips. This was a 4x4 extended cab, and it would break 22 mpg with te cruise on at 80. (only 1800 rpms.) In the Dakota a 5.9 this way, 345 hp, would move that little Mopar truck. If the factory did it, you can to.

You could put any small block in with relatave ease if you are experienced at this kind of thing. A big block will fit but only with major modifications to the truck. The displacement doesn't change the outside dim. of the engine. It's either a small block or big block. It's all in how much money and time you want to put into it.

I would rather put in a 318 or a 340 V8, good on power without having to increase alot of weight.

it truly is both the 440 six p.c.. or the 426 hemi. some say that the 440 is more effective acceptable than the hemi, yet maximum imagine the hemi is king. For the money, you should likely bypass with the 440.
