Because when we banned alcohol people made their own and smuggled it in. Also, organized crime developed and grew strong transporting, smuggling, and selling booze. It turned over a third of the nation into defacto criminals because people still acquired booze illegally, which was a crime. So, in 1933 they abolished prohibition (the bann on booze). If you ban tobacco, there would be smuggling, black markets, and even more organized crime. Imagine a world where dealers would be the connection to Marlboros and Kools. Look at the availability of pot right now. Banning stuff doesn't mean people won't use it or try to use this poison. It would turn one fourth of the nation into nicotine criminals. In other words,it is not practical. They can't even stop the meth epidemic.

Same way it's hard to ban GUNS. Big business controls the market place - and because there are areas whose economy would completely wipe out if they didn't grow tobacco - they are allowing it - and because they can 'tax it'. Don't think that they are not thinking of ways to change the system. Remember, there was a time when alcohol was illegal...and you know what happened in the 20's! Now you have liquor stores on all the corners and some in-between. If they can find a way to get the money in taxes - without too many conservatives complaining - they will. However, keep in mind - that narcotics are legal - you have to have a prescription to obtain them. It's illegal when you try to obtain them when you really don't have a reason.

OK Turk, you need to use spell check but I am guessing on what you mean to ask. Narcotics are illegal only if they are not prescribed by a physician for you, (except for those pesky ones that won't pass the FDA approval because they haven't shown to be any help in any situation!) They are extremely addictive and the body tends to need more and more of them to feel the relief it did when you started taking them. The government doesn't ban tobacco or alcohol for adults, in the hopes that we are old enough to police ourselves (and tobacco and alcohol lobbies pour a lot of money into politics, sad, but true).

Because there is big money attached to liquor and tobacco. And the ones that make the big money make sure to pay the people who make the laws very very well. And it gives the government an opponent. They get to look tough on things when the whole time they are playing it in the favor of big tobacco and liquor companies.

The tobacco industry is big, powerful and they have loads of money. Many of them are major contributors to political campaigns
Thus, no politician would ever try to ban tobacco

Why would you make yet ANOTHER stupid law, banning yet ANOTHER thing we enjoy? If the governement was smart, they'd tax the he!! out of the drugs and make a fortune. People are going to do them either way.
