I really can't afford to have them professionally put in. Do bungee cords work? (My car's a '65 Ford Falcon.)

You can buy seatbelts at a reasonable price from J.C. Whitney and put them in - I ordered some shoulder belts there for a Dodge Dart that only had lap belts. Then you will need to drill holes through the floorboards to put them in. Not too hard if you have a drill already.

Keep in mind, though, that a '65 Falcon will be missing a lot of other safety features that a modern car would have. And most of them are things that you can't just retrofit onto it. I'm not saying you should get rid of it if you want to drive a classic, just be mindful of the risks it entails. If having a car that is safe in an accident is a very high priority, consider trading it in for something more modern - maybe a mid '80s Volvo.

In any state in the union if the car didn't come from the factory with em' you can't be charged with not wearing a seat belt. I have a 1969 Chev pu and they only had lap belts I was stopped in Ind and received a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt and speeding. I took it to court and when questioning the officer about the seatbelt offence he said he didn't se the shoulder strap and assumed that no seatbelt was fastened. I presented the fact from a brochure that said equipped with lapbelts as a safety feature for 1969 and a recess later with the judge looking at my truck I got both the speeding ticket and seatbelt violation droppedYour Falcon was equipped with lapbelts. Look down in the seats for them.If they been removed the anchors(big old square nuts under the floorboard) are still there and just a couple of bolts on each side and the lap belts aren;tthat expensive

Bungee cords WILL NOT WORK!
Very dangerous!
Auto parts stores have aftermarket lap belts.
They can be installed by anyone with some car knowledge.
Just drill holes in the floor next to the seat and bolt the brackets down.

NO I would not use bungee cords because they will not hold you back in a wreck and could break or snap. You may try calling some salvage yards and could probably get seatbelts real cheap. Hopefully you have a friend who is mechanically inclined who can help you install them.

The old lap belts were common in that era, and are readily available from companies like J.C. Whitney or any auto supply house for very little money. Installation simply involves drilling holes in the floor and fastening them with large bolts with large washers under the car to prevent your dynamic weight in a potential accident from pulling the bolt through the floor.

well if your 65 in a nice and original I would look at ebay parts and accessories or if ya know someone who is into old cars they can help.
Even a local swap meet in your area may come up with some.

You don't need a professional to have them put in for the mounting holes should be there and all you have to do is bolt them in.
Email me if you would like if ya have any more questions

Drive really carefully, and hope that you don't smash and go through the windscreen. Otherwise, you could look at trading it in for a car with seatbelts. I wouldn't carry kids in your car as kids without seatbelts equals a deathwish

in the state of louisiana it is not required to have seat belts in a vechile that is older than a 1980, but if you need for safty reasons then you can install them yourself, but would not suggest to do that and no bungee cords will not work.
