Were you at home or school or somewhere else the first time you were successful at it?

I tried and tried to get it with no luck - Then one day at school, we had to take turns tying our shoes in front of everyone - Out of a horrible fear of humiliation, I watched, studied, practiced and I did it correctly! (I still can't tie knots today tho)

yes!
I was at home, my grandfather had a shoestring tied around the leg of a dining room chair for me to practice on.

I tried and tried, finally got it. I was soooo proud!

I do. I was at my Aunt's house. She normally tied my shoes for me. Then one day I guess she got tired of it. She said, "You know how to tie your own shoes. Tie them yourself." I would have had to use all caps to give you a better idea of what she sounded like. Anyway, I'm not sure if that's the day I learned to tie my shoes or if it was the day that I learned to tie them myself. But I can't recall anyone doing it for me after that.

I was at home. I learned how to tie them, and a little while later saw this daddy long leg spider near the shoes. Someone in my family squished it, but a leg fell off and was wiggling. Pretty strange, but true.

I was four. I watched my father, who had taught himself. My parents argued because my mother said my father's way was "weird" and "not the way other kids would do it." He pointed out that at least our shoes *were* tied. I sided with my daddy and tied my shoes his way. After a few times doing that, the "normal" way felt very weird on my hands. Now my youngest cousins and a couple of former neighbor kids tie their shoes that way, too. :-)
