They prey on the weak of mind, people who have had a recent trauma, or those who are vulnerable. They then convince them that the problems they have in life would be greatly reduced by joining.

How else do you lure you pray- you set a trap. They offer something that is enticing or they promise great return.
It could be considered systematic:
1. Establish a target audience.
2. Research the audience.
3. Offer the target audience something that they seek or want.
My patented three step approach to starting a cult.

Are you planning on starting one? Information is on a need to know basis and you don't need to know.
Or for 7 easy payments of only 14.95 each you could by my book: "How to Brainwash the weak"
Actually there used to be a lot of these people around that belonged to a cult group. They were always selling flowers on corners. We took some in for meals from time to time. They were dropped off at the crack of dawn with a bucket of flowers on a corner in the city with only the clothes on their backs and no food and were expected to make money for the group and not spend it and get picked up around sundown.
They were kept away from past associates and not allowed to contact family. It was pretty sad.

a cult can be christian, pagan or any kind of religion. If it is christian, they are at the airport and malls recruiting or going door to door telling you that you will go to hell if you don't join them.I guess fear is their best weapon. But, if it is pagan, they do not recruit or even ask, if a person is interested they will as about it...... pagans don't advertise like some. And quite frankly we don't like being called cults, we are more benign than any christian fanatic could be. Pagans are at peace with the earth. It's the other religions that killed people who were different!!!!!

as a cult leader I can tell you that it's easy to convince people to follow you if you are charismatic and make them believe what you say is the truth. The best way to undermine a person is to appeal to persons own feelings and make them feel that you agree with them. If they think you have a common interest they will be more willing to follow you. Many people who are impressionable have low self opinion, have been ignored most of their life, don't fit into groups easily and may have some emotional/chemical/physical dependence. Make them feel comfortable by listening to them and feigning concern, show them love and help foster their dependences to undermine them. Show them that they are not alone and invite them into your family, then you have your flock and you can bend their minds by mixing lies with the truth and giving them psychoactive drugs.

WE...I mean....THEY....search out lost souls. College campuses are a great hunting ground. So are bars. Anywhere you can find people who are feeling empty inside and in need of some sort of connection.
WE....I mean ...THEY then offer sympathy and a feeling of CONNECTION and LOVE. You would be surprised what a lonely person will do once they feel as if they are part of a group that cares about them....that validates them and their existence.....
WE..I mean.....THEY are often very charasmatic and know all the right things to say.

The most attractive thing in Vaishali, the capital city of Lichhavis, was the beautiful dancer Amrapali. She was named after the mango grove she was first found in. Everybody was eager to win her love. She chose to be the Nagarvadhu, wife to the whole city.
One day, Amrapali saw a young monk. Mesmerised by his calm and attractive presence, she followed him. The sanyasi settled down beneath a mango tree, unmindful of her presence. Unable to attract his attention, she spoke: “Sir, please introduce yourself. Why do you lead an ascetic life in your youth?”
“In search of Truth”, replied the monk. Amrapali was first taken aback. She then teased him: “Of what use is the Truth that wastes your youth?” The monk smiled: “Lady, Absolute Happiness can only be attained thus for the happiness you seek is transitory pleasure”.
Amrapali persisted. “Dear, leave this delusion and enjoy my hospitality which even royalty desires to experience”, offered Amrapali. The monk thought for a moment and said, “I will ask my master. If he allows me, I will come”. Then he took out a ripe Amra Phal (mango) from his bag and gave it to her with the instruction that the fruit be preserved without decay till his return.
The monk returned to Buddha’s shelter and narrated the incident. Buddha gave him permission to stay with Amrapali, much to the puzzlement of other disciples. Buddha calmly said, “I have looked into his eyes — there was no desire. If I had said ‘no’, even then he would have obliged. I trust his meditation”.
the meantime, Amrapali tried all methods to keep the mango fresh, but failed. After one month, the young monk returned. Passionately infatuated, she approached him. The monk ordered, “Lady! Bring me the Amra Phal”. She did so; but the mango had decayed, emitting foul odour and was full of worms.
She asked, “Dear, of what use is this rotten fruit to you?” The monk slowly removed the mango-stone from the fruit. Showing her the rotten skin, he spoke, “Where has the beauty, aroma and taste of the fruit gone? Whereas, the mango-stone is intact and free of decay”. “Of what use is this mango-stone”, argued the courtesan.
The monk smilingly explained, “The mangostone is the most useful. As a seed, it has the potential to regenerate a new body. Likewise, a human being’s meditation is never wasted. This mango-stone signifies the eternal Soul. The protection of the Soul is the real shield; that is the absolute Happiness. Recognise this Truth, Amrapali. You, who could not save the decay of this Amra Phal, how long can you protect your own body from disintegration?”
The Nagarvadhu was speechless; it was as if she had been awakened from a deep sleep. Moved, she asked forgiveness of the young monk. She felt cleansed and expressed her desire to see the monk’s master.
Later, Buddha visited Vaishali and stayed at Amrapali’s abode. She touched Buddha’s feet and said, “I tried my best to attract your monk, but he convinced me by his awareness that real life is in your shelter”. She renunciated the life of a courtesan and donated her belongings to the Buddhist Sangha.
Buddha accepted her in the monastery as a disciple, to the chant of “Sangham sharanam gachhami, Dhammam sharanam gachhami”.

They tell you that you are sinful without them and their literature to make you reborn as a pure person. They tell you that they are the only way to eternal peace...and that without them you are damned...
Lots of cults out there when you really start to think about it.
