i have an astigmatism(really bad!) and i can only wear, and have been for 5 years, only been wearing toric lenses. i have asked my doctor if i can buy "normal" types of lenses, and he has said no. it is especially disappointing when companies come out with new types of lenses that i would like to try, but can't because they don't make a toric version. :-(

If you do have "bad" atigmatism then a non toric lens would not let you see clearly enough. Astigmatism basically means that your eye has more than just one power. So, the lens just being says -2.00 all the way around would not work. That's why the lens is different, it has different powers in different meridians to compensate for the different powers in your eye (lots of differents, sorry).

Usually if your astigmatic correction is less than -o.75, you would most likely be wearing sperical contacts.

I believe if your astigmatic correction is in the -2.00 or worse, you definitely will be wearing toric lenses.

My daughter has bad astigmmatisms and she was told not to get contacts because they would not lie flat on her eyes, but if she did get contacts she should get the toric contacts. A good eye doctor can advise you.
