I'm home schooled and would like to put in a good word for "fellow homeschoolers". In most cases home schooled students are very academically advanced but then people argue that when it comes to socializing we don't score as high. But that isn't a very fair argument, show me a public school that doesn't have its share of "socially inept" kids. People need to realize that we don't stay huddled in our rooms pouring over Faulkner and Shakespeare, never seeing the outside world or another human being apart from our mommy. All the homeschoolers I know either play sports, go to dance class, gymnastics, jam on the guitar with friends or hang out at the mall or movie theater in their spare time. I went to public school until 6th grade and was less social back then than I am now. These days, since homeschooling has spread like wildfire, there are tons of organizations and programs that offer homeschoolers social outlets, like dances, sports teams, and that type of thing. I have a lot of fun with my friends when we get together, many of whom are public school students. I've learned plenty of life lessons that will come into play in the "real world" as an adult too. All I'm going to say is that it ultimately depends on the individual--and that the home schooled kids I know don't deserve to be stereotyped by society as shy geeks. They're really cool, kind-hearted people. Since I went to public school for the majority of my life, I can compare, side by side, public school and homeschooling without a biased opinion--homeschooling is not all that I've ever known. On the academic level homeschooling is a heck of a lot superior, and with all the programs for the homeschooling community out there now, socializing really is not a problem. Sorry for writing so much, and if you've read all of this...thanks. I apologise if I come across as ridiculously defensive--I just want to dispell some of the negative traits attributed to homeschooling and allow people to see that it is not all that bad.

Good grief, would peopel stop complaining about the "their"???? It is one of the TOP mistakes made by people in general, regardless of where they were educated.

Now to actually answer the question, people pick on homeschoolers because people don't like what is different. Homeschoolers are different because they are essentially growing up in a different culture but because they're not from somewhere else, they're frowned upon because they should 'be like everybody else'. Someone may come over from a different country and be different socially and in other ways but it will be accepted because they're from somewhere else. Our society wants everyone growing up here to be the same, for the most part, so homeschoolers get picked on.

It is due to utter ignorance.

Those that slam my children with comments such as "socially retarded" are, sad to say, total fools.

If one would take the time to put the facts into their vocabulary one would be able to rise above the ridiculous comments and come to an understanding of the truth. Thus the fool will become wise.

I've often sensed that public school retards the academic growth of many students. It is very sad to see children miss out on all of the things they could otherwise be doing.

My friend has a comment for all of you that think we lack socialization. She says, "We are not socialists."

Homeschool children are by far more friendly and respectful to ALL others than what it is I witness coming from the *mouths* of the naysayers. If my students were to post a comment on this question it would be polite and worthwhile -- unlike the crude junk some are spewing.

FIND OUT THE TRUTH! Go to an homeschool conference. Visit a church with many homeschool families. Listen. Open your ears and find out what it is that we are really doing. Look online at all of the options. Don't judge us without the facts.

Ignorance is bliss....?????? Nope. It's retarded.

I won't get into the use of the word their, there, or they're....

Home Schooled children are the results of parents who have taken the stand to do something better for their children and have decided that the public school system isn't going to be the answer.

It's no different than the person who has decided that Social Security is not going to be the answer for their retirement and chooses to invest in 401K or similar type investments. Some people would ridicule that person, and others would say they were very wise in their investment decision.

Home School parents are investing their time and attention into their children, and the rewards will come back to them ten fold!!

People just have closed minds. My nieces and nephews were home schooled. Ones a manager of a bank, ones a manager in a casino, ones a slot technician, ones an assistant manager of a restaurant. The other two (there's 6 in the family) were put in public schools since the mother had to go to work. I'll see how that turns out when they grow up. For being home schooled the other ones are smarter than most.

I guess people are just nasty and like to pick on others to make themselves feel superior! I am guessing that all of you who can't let the mistaken go are those who are deadset against homeschooling! I have two sons...one homeschooled and one public-schooled. It was either take my teenager home and teach him or watch him slip through the cracks and eventually drop out. Both boys are doing very well in their respective "schools".

I think it depends on the motives. We had a case several years ago where a mother was apparently homeschooling her child to hide the abuse & neglect. The boy ended up dying of starvation. There are others who are near hermits, maybe paranoid of the world. They homeschool the kids to protect them from exposure to the cruel world. These kids end up totally screwed up.

My brother & his wife homeschooled their three kids. All three came out great. They wanted to protect the kids from the secular society in the public school system. The kids were taken to plenty of church activities. The other Christian homeschooling parents all united to take kids on outings together. And, apparently the kids were not secluded from "normal" kids. As a result, the kids were NOT socially maladjusted. All three are very successful & well adjusted.

A lot of people pick on kids that are home schooled because they think that anything that is different bust be weird.

I know people that are home schooled and it's been my experience that they aren't on the same fast paced curriculum that the kids in public schools are on. Even if the kids that are home schooled do learn about all the same stuff by the end of the year.

They pick on us because we haven't grown up around our peers and we missed out on certain things that they think are essential. It has nothing to do with being smart. Like with me, I never learned to play any sports. So, when I went to public school some of the guys called me "home school" because I had no athletic ability. I was strong, but uncoordinated. I also don't have very good social skills. I was involved with stuff(AWANA, girl scouts, dance,...) , but since I wasn't around other kids all of the time, I didn't know how to act around my peers. So, they pick on us because we are different from them.

and btw ceprn: What you wrote is a load of bs. You should look at home schooled kids test scores and see who they compare to those of kids from public schools. I've home schooled and now go to a public school and I had absolutely no difficulty making the transition into the academic world of public school. If anything I had to relearn things that I already knew. So, college degrees have nothing to do with it. Stop lying to yourself.

Homeschoolers miss out on the social interaction that school provides. There is more to learning than just facts and figures.

The school experience helps prepare us for life.
