It would be a humanitarian disaster. Hospitals rely on people who must drive there to work and deliver items. Firefighters would not be able to respond to calls. EMS would not be able to respond to calls. The police would not be able to respond to calls. People who work hard for little money would lose a whole day's wages. (And that would be bringing the WRONG people to their knees). Who would man the electric power in the city?

Even during natural disasters(in my city, we sometimes get torrential flooding), when the police are running crawlers on the news telling everyone to stay home, there is always this one exception: Only essential people should report to work.

The trouble is, even if everyone stayed home for one day, it would not affect gas companies in the long run. Not just one day.
And, what if the big gas conglomerates went to their knees? How would we get gas the day after our protest ended?

**edit: Ok, ok, not "How would we get gas?" bc the answer to that is "eat beans." I meant, "how would we get gasoline?" ;-)

I'm ready for the revolution! If August the 18th is the day... I'm there. Just let everybody else know, since you and I will be only people doing it. People don't care anymore. They live under the illusion that the government is taking care of everything, when in reality... they are just taking freedoms away from us. One by one, until there's none left... then everybody will be sitting around, scratching their heads, wondering what happened.

I am no fan of the high gas prices (still lower than most of the world), but I do not recall everyone willing to share the lack of profits that the oil companies faced when oil was $20.00 a barrel. Perhaps we should focus on the supply and demand factor. As long as we as consumers pay, they can charge whatever they want. I don't see the government regulating the price of toilet tissue and we all use that.

It would be the happiest day of my life.

A day when all people act like one and show the oil mafia that they cannot drink nor use their oil. Storage capacities would be maxed out, tankers would have to wait on the open sea, trucks wouldn't have a reason to roll and the nature would breathe deep and long.

But given the level of education in this formerly great country I think i have to wait a VERY long time for this day to arrive.

Its a good idea but it would never happen. People cant just get off work. Or not show up to school. What about cops, doctors, and so on. If this were to work it would have to be big and for more then one day and that just will never happen. Nice try though. Have fun with your day off though!

A speck of sand on a beach. The apetite for fuel will never subside. If it is not us, it will be China and India using the resources as they continue to develop. You cannot stop companies from making money. Maybe you should target the goverment for increasingly taxing fuel and feeding their insatiable apetite for our cash.

How about that?

I have a better idea. Everyone should live within a couple miles of their work, not 30. and we'll all buy bicycles. This will bring forth a more healthy, prosperous, and sexy nation.

its sad but if we cant get all the americans to agree on our own government then chances of coordinating a stay home national day will never happen....
