She has a normal nylon collar. Everytime we put it on her, a bunch of mats form around her neck. What do I do besides shave her?

Don't leave the collar on her all the time. Only put it on the dog when she goes out. Then, when she comes in from her walk, COMB out her neck area. Don't just use a brush..they only get the top coat, you need to use a comb to get down to the skin.
Matts take some time to form....they are not going to just be there after an hour walk. Your only other option is to trim her down short. Full coats are alot of work.

I would take her to a groomer and have them shave her down just a bit. It will be alot easier for you rather than brushing her daily and your dog won't be in pain from the fur pulling at her neck.

its not good for a collar to be left on a dog for long periods of time.. and daily brushing will stop the matts, you dont want to shave your dog...its not fair to them when five min of brushing will solve the problem..

the collar is probably rubbing against her neck. you should try a different type of collar

Instead of shaving her down you can just try keeping her groomed short.
