There are many different kinds of Art Directors. There are Art Directors for major department stores and big businesses, mostly advertising related. These jobs require a college degree. Yes there may be travel, the Longaberger Basket Company out of Newark, OH ($1 Billion anual sales) does send their Art Director to places like Europe. There are Museum Curators and Gallery Curators (travel would depend on the size of the business) and then there's little people like me, a life time artist (savageartworks. com) who are Art Directors for non-profits and we get to travel to and from work every day. Education is the key to sucess in Arts Administration! Good luck!
