Once, we had someone over, and my dogs started doing tricks all on his own, and doing them REALLY good when we told him to. Was he trying to impress the person that was over?

Maybe, but more likely he wanted the attention and praise from your guest that he normally gets from you for these tricks. I think it's very smart and was probably awfully cute!

Dogs love attention and they like to please us. I think they know when we want to impress someone with their tricks.

oh yes, dogs love to impress people. one day my dog rented a limo and he was throwing money and bones around like a big spender.

I don't think that the consciously try and impress. It's just that the are excited and want to please people.
