I have 6 monthn old golden retirver and im not really sure but, I kinda get the feeling she is some what pregnant, and we don't really want her to have puppies because we cant afford to keep them, and we dont want to put them to sleep, and as i was blow drying her after her bath, ive notice she developing breast and her nipples are getting big, is she pregnant? and is she is how do we prevent her from given birth? we would love puppies but not at this moment we were suppose to get her spayed but we are having money problems and we couldnt afford it, and i dont know what to do if she's pregnant. any advice would be very helpful right about now.
Thanks,Shela

Has she been in heat yet? Most puppies come into heat at that time...if she has, was she kept where a male dog could get to her? If you answer yes to both questions, then she is probably pregnant. The only way to keep her from having the puppies is to have her fixed NOW! Vets take credit cards...If you did not have the money to fix her, it is your responsibility to keep her from becoming pregnant. Some humane society will do a spay/neuter for low cost. Try them to have her spayed. They might be willing to spay instead of trying to place unwanted puppies.
OK, lets say she is pregnant, and you can't get her fixed:
Keep her on puppy food until puppies are weined
IF you know when she was in heat, count about 9 weeks...that is her due date (give or take a day or two...or a week if you did not see her breed).
She should be able to deliver puppies without any problems. The only problems you will run into are stuck puppies, or no puppies at all (hard pushing for over 2 hrs).
As the puppies are born (as long as mom is taking care of them) do not do anything...you may put them on a heating pad. Let MOM do her job...if she is not licking the membrane off of them, you need to remove it. Dogs have natural instincts that we as humans have forgotten...let her use them.
Be sure to keep your vet informed about your dog.
In the long run, it will be cheaper to have her fixed now than to let her have the puppies.
You will have to take her and the puppies to the vet to be cked out, you have puppy shots for all of the puppies (if you are a responsible owner you will give the puppies their first shots).
Mom has to stay on puppy food, and you will eventually have severaly mouths to feed for 6-8weeks.
Go ahead and get her fixed...not worth the trouble! Well worth the money spent now.

Dogs are known as 'optimistic' breeders; their body will start to show nipple and mammary development after every heat cycle whether they're pregnant or not. At about 15 days (roughly 2 weeks after the end of the heat cycle) the developing embryos are visible on ultrasound; at about 20 days they might be palpable to a very talented (and careful) veterinarian. At 35 days the pups are visible on X-rays and definitely palpable; dogs will start to 'show' (look pregnant) at about this time. At about 63 days you have puppies. There are currently no blood tests that can detect pregnancy early on - at least, not reliably enough to be worth the cost.
A bit of advice - it seems like you're trying to have it all ways and using money as your excuse. If you 'can't afford' to have her spayed, you certainly can't afford to raise puppies. So if you 'don't want the puppies put down' it seems you will be trying to foist off the expense of their care - *your* responsibility - on some shelter, because you failed to keep *your* dog from getting pregnant in the first place. If you really 'can't afford' any of this, maybe you 'can't afford' to have a dog at all and should give her to someone who *can* afford to take better care of her.

hmmm.. I think at 6 months she is just now maturing. Does she spend time with other dogs so that she has opportunity to have sex? If she has been in heat already and is already pregnant, then the best thing is to let her have the babies, and give them away when they are old enough, and then get her spayed. They say it is better for their health if they have one litter anyway. I know what you mean about not being able to afford it.. I've been in that situation too. Do you know who the sire (father) is? To prevent her from getting pregnant, if she is not already, keep her away from male dogs.

The only way to know for sure is to take her to the vet. The vet can tell you if she is pregnant and if so how far along. If she isn't too far along an injection can be given, if she is farther along the only way to remedy the problem is the let her have the pups or have her spayed.
