Naturally you have to bleach your hair to get it to a lighter color. But why don't you go to Sally's Beauty Supply and buy the temporary hair color. They have all kinds of freaky colors that you would probably like. They even shampoo out eventually and you won't be stuck with the hair color when you decide to change it again. It's cool to know you like colors that are different from everyone else. It never hurts to try something new! Go check out their colors and see what they have to offer, you might find something that works for you. Good Luck!

RE:
How do I dye dark hair without bleaching?
I have dark brown (black basically) hair and I want to dye it. I want a crazy color like purple or blue or red, not something found in nature, basically. BUT, I want to use a non-permanent dye and I don't want to bleach my hair. Any suggestions for what to do or what to buy?

you have to lighten your hair first honestly it won't work other wise
if you are worried about that scary BLEACH word relax. Get the Herbal Essences lightening kit more natural and not as harsh and it shouldn't do anything strange like some of the more amonia based ones will do (turn hair bright orange or yellow for example). Then you can dye it any color of the rainbow as you choose.
Then if you want to go back to your original hair color just do a dark brown so it will blend in when your roots begin to grow back
Good Luck

You can buy manic panic vegetable dyes and use over your color, they are all natural semi-permanent and come in crazy colors. But with dark hair it will look more like an overwash not a color change, you will see it in certain lights, but not the bright, bright "crayon color" type thing. If you really want that and want to DIY, bleach your hair as light as possible then use the manic panic, it actually lasts longer if your hair is on the dry side first, since it's vegetable oil based. But it will leave color residue after it fades.

I know someone with dark hair and they bleached it white and then they dyed it the color they wanted --- condition your hair a lot and cut it short before the process

You can't. Your dark hair will affect how bright/light the color comes through. Sorry.

Lemon will lighten your hair, but only slightly.
Perioxide will lighten it also, use heat with it.
If you want it lighter then youll have to get it chemically lightened.
