My 4-5 month old, 30 lb. puppy managed to get the lid off of the kitchen trash and fish out this morning's coffee filter. Most of the grounds dumped into the trash when she got it (only made 1 cup this morning--about 3 tbsp of grounds) but she chewed the filter into several pieces. There seem to be a number of vets and vet techs out there: How bad are coffee grounds for dogs? It doesn't appear that she intentionally ingested any, but there may have been some incidental ingestion (less than a teaspoon).... sigh...Thanks.

Okay, after calling about 5 vets I finally got through to someone. They said not to worry unless she starts throwing up or having diarrhea. Thanks everyone.

The little bit that she ate would not hurt her. Sometimes the caffeine could increase the heart rate in an animal if they ate too much, but the coffee has been made already, and a lot of the caffeine would be in the coffee that you drank. I wouldn't worry about it. If she had any symptoms, they would show up in the first 2 hours.

I'm not a vet or vet tech, but I don't think that should hurt her. I use to clean house for a family and when I'd wipe off the kitchen counter spilled coffee beans would land on the floor and their lab would eat them. They didn't bother her. I think if anything goes wrong at all it would be that she may have a little bit of a tummy ache, but nothing serious.

Um, being a puppy, this could be potentially risky. Pick up the phone and call your vet - have the container the coffee came out of with ingredients on it beside you so you can let them know what the ingredients are.

Seeing as she ate used grounds, they won't be as potent but still, check it out to be sure.

Good luck.

Your doggy is fine, my dog eats tolite paper rolls and feminie products both are something he shouldnt but he is fine, dont worry about your dogs coffee fixes, but you might want to put it up some where before you leave or when your not in the room, because hes playful and curious. Just keep an eye out for things that he could get into his mouth. Pups are like babys, they love small things that could hurt them, and cry and poop all the time. Good luck and dont worry hes fine.

This could be dangerous! Was the coffee regular or decaf? An ingredient in caffeine called Theobromine us dangerous to dogs, it is the same ingredient in chocolate that is dangerous to dogs. In such a small amount, probably not bad, but keep an eye on her....

Caffeine can cause tremors, heart arrhythmias, and seizures in dogs, but a lot depends on the amount eaten.
