Letting one or two of the people rule and have thier say and way before actually thinking about the consequences. Stupidity follows when you let a few have thier way and its a "follow the leader" mentality.

Mob mentality begins with a common grievance. The grievance can be as simple as "the youth" feeling restricted by "the elders" to as complex as lack of ethnic equality. Once the tension is presented, a few individuals begin to fight against or antagonize the other party. Due to the tension, the mob then forms as more and more individuals join in the fight. Eventually the mob grows to the point that it is uncontrollable and generally degrades into chaos. Once the chaos is reached, generally restrictions and consequences must be leveled to regain control.
In essence, mob mentality occurs once a group is no longer controlled through leaders or reason and chaos is rampant.

I think their response is essentially human. We have many urges which do not surface in usual organised society and everyday life.

However, when there are changes, especially in large group dynamics, people's moods and behaviours change too. Even the most peaceful protest, or concert, or any large gathering of people will "hype" you up. it can excite you so that for hours or even days afterwards you act as if on a "high".

The same goes for rioting etc, and would be exacerbated by alcohol, meaning that inhibitions (such as ones desire not to be arrested) would have less influence on your thinking.

Remember, we have only taken part in "civilised" society for 1000 years or less. Before that most people behaved in a quite barbaric manner, resorting to violence to solve any issue, and existing with little or no legal system. There are obvious exceptions (Rome, Greece), but realistically we haven't had enough time as a collective to evolve beyond natural instincts to resort to group mentality in a time of high excitement.

How about the mobs that raid honest abortion doctors' offices? It's a mob mentality that motivates those sorry souls.

This is a need of humans to regress to the underlying animalistic nature from which we derived.
