While a "hippy" doesn't really have a negative meaning to me, I know that to my parents, you definately would defend yourself if someone called you a "hippy." Environmental enthusiasts I know are more often referred to as "Tree-huggers," which, in my opinion, is not very offensive at all. Since I am only a teenager, I can't really tell you how I think the name has changed over time. However, I can tell you that the one "hardcore" environmentalist I know does not take offense at being labeled at all because she feels good about her values.

To me a hippy is based on outward appearance, not on what someone believes. If you have long, uncombed hair, don't wash, and are high all the time than you are a hippy. If you want to protect the environment and want biodiversity and you cut your hair, wash, and level-headed than you are a Liberal.

A hippie will always be a hippie. Hippies are Humanitarians.
Which includes environmental issues. Hippies are the ones
who create social changes, to get the GOV off their A****!! And
force them to DO something. Hippies are COOL...........

To me a Hippie (as opposed to Democrat) is the opposite of a Republican.

The word "hippie" was popularized by the late San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen. He is also credited as among the first to include the words "beatnik" and "yuppie" in his column.

It's meaning is timeless...

Hippies dont change, that IS the essense of hippy. If they were to change they would have to get off the couch and actually do something other than braiding hair, hugging tree, listening to music and smoking pot.

1. In order to be 'Redneck', you don't necessarily have to live in the 'country'. 2. The location in which you live doesn't matter, You could live in the middle of a forest and still have a terrible carbon footprint. You could live in Suburbia and make less emissions than somebody living in a country-like location. 3. You are over-generalizing. We don't all oppose industrialization. We don't randomly make fun of people for living in the country. 4. You should further explain the urban area/ illegal immigration sentence.

It's easier to say than ecoterrorists or environmentalists. Many of them are children of the late sixties mentality of peaceniks and tree-huggers. They are convinced on actuality of global warming and the world will end if we don't take drastic measures to stop the madness of use of petroleum products, etc.
