All hair has what is called NRP or natural remaining pigment. What this means is that your base color (or what color would be left if you removed everything else) would be red. Bleaching takes hair color past the NRP to brighter levels, for example red orange, orange, yellow orange, yellow, and pale yellow.

Peroxide works in a similiar way but not as effective. The result of placing peroxide in your hair would vary on the type of hair you have, the medications you may be on, if you have previously colored hair, or are pregnant, etc.

I would recommend a color consultation with any stylist. Most consultaions are free so there is no obligation. Stylists should ask questions to better get to know you and your hair so that they know what products to use. If your worried about price, most salons have assistants who are trained to take care of your hair at an affordable price.

So go see a professional before you do it yourself. It will save you the grief of having haircolor you did yourself and are not happy with.

I tried peroxide on my jet black hair--it didn't do much. However I tried jolen cream bleach just to streak my hair in the front, and it turned a gawd awful auburn halloween orange! I imagine IF peroxide work it would turn the same color.

Word of advice for dark haired people, go to a salon! I found out that in order for dark hair to take color, they have to bleach it almost platinum blonde before setting the lighter color over it, just because of the orange effect.

It may not do much. But, it could discolor your hair. It's possible that your hair might turn an orangish color. Peroxide is not a smart way to lighten your hair. Try a lightening product over the counter stuff(I really don't recommend that but it's the cheapest way). Or go to a salon. A smart stylist will help you figure out what is best for your hair and try to stay within a budget if you have one.

DON'T use peroxide. Go to a salon and have them use color erase on your hair. It's WAY less damaging. Then, either have them color it light brown, or suggest an at home coloring system that you can use to do it yourself. I'd pick an ash brown shade to minimize the red pigment that will become prominent in your hair after bleaching.

It will turn orange. TRUST ME. I have brown hair so dark it's almost black. It will look awful, and your hair will be damaged as well. I suggest going to a professional, but if you insist on doing it yourself, I've had some luck by buying a color a few shades lighter than what I want. It is very hard to dye really dark hair like ours, but I wish you the best of luck! :)

Ah, yes, the peroxide trick. Not good.

Don't do it; it'll dry your hair out and the ends will look so nasty in a month or so. I did this in eleventh grade, but only on some parts of my hair. It was a pretty honey blonde color, but then it was damaged and more obviously so as it grew out. Don't do it.

It will turn the color of copper and look washed out and will be damaged. You need to get a hair dye that is Light Ash Brown. Ash colors take away the orangy.reddish tones.

I honestly think that the peroxide will leave your hair an orangy color. Your best bet is to go to a hair salon and have them answer your questions.

it will go through various reds/ginger shades before reaching the final colour....and my guess is it will be a disgusting orange..as the bleach stops working after a certain length of time- you would need to put another application of peroxide/bleach powder on it to blonde it up- then after all this your hair with froth up like a cotton wool ball when it gets wet because of the structual damage you would of caused- it will stretch and snap of if you brush it when wet....and on top of all that you need to touch the roots up every few weeks.

It will be dirty blonde, your best bet is to just go buy a kit from Wal-Mart, they're really fool-proof these days. I love Garnier Fructis, it keeps color really long, and doesn't leave my hair dehydrated. Promise, it's a whole lot better than peroxide, and you can do it yourself!
