This is my second baby and I haven been told that after your first child the uterus has to work a lot harder than usual to go back to size. But mine hurts so badly that I cannot even breastfeed her, it starts cramping so badly that I have to stop.I want to breastfeed and my milk is beginning to come in today. When does this pain go away so I can breastfeed my baby and not hurt anymore?

The cramping is normal, and nursing does bring on the cramping. It's actually good because it brings your uterus back down to size. It will last a couple of weeks. If it is hurting more than you think it should then call your doctor and let him/her know.

My doctors gave me a double dose of ibuprofin that I was supposed to take twice a day or as needed (whichever was less, of course). I was cramping for at least a week, and in the first few days I don't think I could have breastfed without the stuff. They offered something stronger (like vicoden or something) but I turned it down. So I was in pain, but at least I wasn't feeling drugged trying to take care of my baby. And the pain was still managable, even though it was there. If your doctor didn't recommend anything before you left the hospital, you may want to ask about some pain meds to relieve the cramps. You might be able to take some tylenol in the meanwhile.

You are still having contractions. You body is making sure everything is out and is trying to return to a normal size. Is is shrinking and the hormones from nursing your baby makes it strong. I had them big time with my second child.
I would take some Tylenol or something gentle after nursing. You can use a heating pad as well. The pain should only days a few more days. It'll pass. Make sure you nurse all you can now. Your baby needs that colustum and baby needs to learn how to nurse and to know mamas smell.

Hang in there! It'll pass.

The breast feeding causes the cramping as far as I know..but the sooner you keep feeding, the better it will be..call your doctor about what you can use for pain relief..I went through the same thing, but it was worth it..

try massaging the muscles just above the pelvic bone and try hot compresses while u are breastfeeding her. they say that breastfeeding helps the uterus go down . so if u are still cramping really bad i would go back to the doc and have him check u out. its better to be safe than sorry. hope everything goes good for u. please just see your doc if this continues.

Sorry to hear that you're in pain. It takes between 6-8 weeks for you body to clean itself out if you know what I mean. If it is really bad it could be something else, I suggest seeing your doctor.

Don't stop breastfeeding. Just deal with the pain. It will soon go away. It stinks but you'll be alright. Good Luck with your family.

I have heard that breastfeeding helps the uterus go back to normal faster so don't stop.

Have your doctor check it, My friend went through that, they told her it was normal, until the bleeding increased and damn near killed her. They had left part of the placenta in her.
