Many kittens who are taken too early or whose mother dies exhibit chewing and sucking tendencies, some never grow out of it. Sometimes it can be a genetic fault and it can be passed on from mother or father to daughter or son.

They can also end up with aggression and other behavioural problems, such as inappropriate urination. Mom cats teach their kittens manners and this is usually done up until 10-12 weeks of age. If it's not possible to return it to it's mother, then you need to provide safe things for it to chew, large fresh lamb bones are good or chicken necks (which are good for it's teeth too) or a dried pigs ear. Keep anything such as houseplants, electrical cords, etc out of the kittens reach.

When you catch the kitten chewing something it shouldn't, redirect it to the other "safe" things you have provided, it might get the message and learn that it's only allowed chew certain things.

You don't! Kittens and puppies will chew and you just have to watch them and keep hazardous stuff out of their way.

When you are not at home be sure to put the kitten in a "cat safe" room, maybe a bathroom. At that age a kitten should never have run of the house if you are not at home or when you go to sleep at night.

Be sure that youngster has food. At least four meals a day. If your kitten is hungry she is more likely to injest something bad for her. Use canned kitten food. Dry food is the pits for cats. Go to: www.littlebigcat and read the article by Jean Hovfe, DVM on why cats should not be fed dry food. She also has an excellent articles on vaccinations and many behavior issue you may encounter with your new kitten (who will be a cat before you know it)

They have over the counter sprays to help with that. Ask your vet if you are concerned with her health and such substances.
