I'm a little curious. I remember reading before that the doctor will use a hook or his/her fingernail to break the sac. But something I read recently said that the sac is extremely difficult to puncture. Will a doctor actually try to just use a fingernail or something or do they always use the hook?

I was a midwife for 15 years. The hook is called an amni hook, it's plastic, and all you do it guide it into the birth canal, and knick the sac of membranes, it's painless. It's done to speed up labor. Often times, the membranes are tough, but the amni hook has a little thing that sticks out the rupture the sac

We always have the hooks available to us, so no one has to use a fingernail, plus, we're gloved up during this whole process, so a fingernail would certainly be out of the question.

I had the water broken on all 4 of my pregnancies and the doctor used a long hook each time. It looks like a shishkabob skewer, but it's plastic and with a little hook on the end. I've never heard of them using a fingernail.

It's called a AmnioticHook or Amni Hook
Like a long thing crochet hook with a sharp but blunt point that snags the sac and breaks it.

I just had a baby 10 months ago and I remember the doctor using this very long hook. It looked like a very long crochet needle and I don't remember feeling a thing.

They use the hook. It really doesnt hurt. Just feels like you've urinated all over yourself when its broken. I wouldnt want a doctor using his fingernail on me!

When I was induced, they tried using a gloved finger.
That didn't work...it is pretty tough, they had to use the hook. It was all pretty gross...but when you're in labor, who the hell cares?!

Hope this helps!
