I want to learn German and am deciding whether or not I want to learn it in school or by myself. Some tell me to learn on my own and that a class is a waste of time because you have to stay at the same pace as the class. Others tell me that classes are the way to go. A local community college is offering a German class this month so I wanted to get some opinions on the matter. I am motivated and don’t think I would slack learning it on my own. All opinions and personal experiences welcomed!

I started German last year in high school. The teacher recognized my motivation and work ethic. She decided that I could skip the rest of German I and go into German II in the second semester. She told me that I needed to learn what I was missing in the first semester of German II. She gave me extra work, and I learnt it. I went into German II and I got the second highest grade in her class.

Basically, try your school's program. If you don't see yourself learning enough, then study out of school (I'm doing that anyway with verb books, dictionaries, et cetera). The high school learning environment encourages speaking which is vital to fluency. You might not get that at a college.

I feel it is larger to research it in university. That manner, you are going to have less complicated entry to studying ingredients, a instructor, and men and women to train with who're on the equal degree as you within the language. How so much you be trained by way of finding out to your possess rather is dependent upon your possess dedication and energy. Although you'll transfer enormously quicker on your own if you happen to with no trouble comprehend what you are studying, the complete factor of studying a language is verbal exchange, and that possibly difficult to do with simply your self. Being in a category additionally is helping restrict you from slacking off while your specific grades are at the line, and now not simply your loose time. Besides, nobody mentioned you can not research to your possess WHILE taking formal categories. If some thing, you'll opt for to take a million or two semesters of the language fundamentals then advancing to your possess, or self-finding out the effortless stuff now so you'll best it in college.

There is no question here. First you must learn the basics and then comes practice. It is better to learn in an organized classroom situation, than to attempt it on your own. Learning a new language is not just a matter of writing or speaking, you must also learn how to think in that new language. My advice would be to go to school first and then make friends with as many people as you can that speak that language regularly

Take the class at the community college and teach yourself. It takes time to master a language. Once you've got the basics down then it's up to you to try and find someone you can converse in German with on a regular basis. It's truly the only way to improve your skills. Good luck!

I would prefer on my own. But you might need to hear how the language is pronounced to grasp it better. I almost learned Spanish from a book (of course, they have some of the easiest phonetics of all languages) but I had to return it to the library. If you know the pronunciations, you can move as far as you need to go by yourself. You might find the class slow-paced if you started the book and then went to a class (like me).

well i think u should learn on your own because in school they have lot of homework and tests and quizs and other hard stuffs. but you won't get it in the first place. and sometimez you will say omgosh this is the worst class i ever had. if you startrd to learn on your own its much more easier. if you don't know something you coud ask someone who knows that language for help. you don't need to go through all the class work.. like i speak another language and i like to watch movies in an another language and i don't know that language. but i put subtitles to make me understand. after a few months i don't put subtitles because i learning and mostly started to understand that language. so i think you should try it. ok bye. hope you choose me as the best answer. ok see ya . ttl

As long as you are motivated, and have access to good teaching materials, I don't see why you couldn't teach yourself. It might depend on what you want to learn it for, for instance, getting a job in that country, or being a tourist there, or learning for the sake of learning..
Language classes may teach more formally, identifying parts of speech, and use terms like" first and second person, past, present and future tense". Language programs may teach by repetition:" Take me to the airport, take me to the airport."
The choice is yours.

Take the class. You may move to another classroom later on if that first one is kind of slow for you.

It is very DIFFICULT to learn a new language totally by yourself.
However, it maybe OK to maintain that ability by yourself at home once you have mastered it to some degree.

Trust me. I speak many foreign languages.

Check out the Rosetta Stone software - you be speaking German in no time without any classes - but it would also make a great supplement to your class.

I tried learning German by myself, it wasn't easy. It was easier to be taught in school. I made it all the way up to German 4 in high school.
