It has been my experience from being paired up with many other people that very few are really honest about their golf game. Most people think nothing of moving their ball from a bad lie, not counting lost ball and lateral strokes, taking muligans and giving and taking "gimmies" that are not really gimmies. I have played with people who's final score was off by as much as 15 strokes. How can someone who shot a 95 convince themselves they shot an 80? For the sake of pace, I can understand not going back to the tee box on a lost ball, but you still lie 4, whether you hit a provisional or take a drop. Sometimes it's a little discouraging and you have to wonder if they live their lives like that too.

I vote the following as the most bullshit answer so far. Why would someone with a 4 handicap need to take 3 mulligans or "throw his ball" onto the fairway. Puh-lease.

"I play in tournaments and with my friends. Obviously in tournaments i follow the rules, but when i'm with my friends its give and take sometimes we'll take 3 mulligans off the tee and throw theball into the fairway, the rounds we do this I don't count towards my handicap, which is an honest 4.3. "

You have hit the nail on the head!

I used to play lots of handicap tournaments and once I got paired up with someone with an index of 8 and they proceeded to shoot 4 under and the front and even on the back. That is a cheater. However, he never "fixed" his lies and followed the rules because I was on his every move after he started birdie-birdie. So, after witnessing this one too many times I stopped playing handicap tournaments.

The next straw for this camel's back is when I meet up with a stranger on the first tee and they proceed to break every rule. Their scorecard said 79, but their score was more in the range of 99. Then, on more than one occasion, they phone their friends to brag. Please, you shot 100 and you're claiming that you broke 80. That not so much a cheater, than it is a loser.

The final straw is when I played a guy that, by my score keeping, shot a legit 74. By his scorecard, he had 82. The last I saw of him was when he went to turn in his scores in the pro-shop for his handicap. This guy, like the first one I mentioned, is a golf cheat to the nth degree.

The most honest (with their scores) are doctors, local golf pros, and the better high school kids. Women tend to be very honest with their scores regardless of occupation.

I don't take mulligans (even if the tee shot is ugly), but sometimes I will fix a bad lie, but usually it is because the course is in rough shape... I am a strictly recreational player, so if my score is technically off by a few strokes there is no one harmed. Golf is like life, people lie to make themselves look better... People lie about hot much money they make, how many girls they have slept with, all that BS... Just part of life, I wouldn't let it ruin my golf experience...

Oh hell yes! I take a mulligan per stroke sometimes, never count penalty strokes, ground my club in the sand traps, carry about 20 clubs in my bag, kick my ball to a better lie.... but I don't play for money (because I suck) I just play for the excercise and enjoyment, and believe me, the game is a LOT more enjoyable if you cheat. I shot an 83 the last time I was out... If I hadn't cheated it would've been more like 138!

Actually, most people cheat at golf. If you are not following the strict USGA guidelines and know every rule to its fullest, then you are bound to make a fault and not disclose it to your fellow players. Thus, you are cheating. Whether you blatantly cheat or not, by shaving strokes, or replacing the ball for a better lie is a matter of how honorable you are. If you are just out on the local course shooting a casual round with your buddies and are making up "as you go" rules, then cheating is a matter of interpretation.

It really depends. If my buddies and I are out playing just to have a couple of beers and get out for a while, we're pretty lax on the rules. Nobody wants to be obsessed with every detail of the USGA rulebook when you're just out to have fun. But if you're a competitive person or you have a long-running bet, or you're out there really trying to score well, then you have to adhere to the rules. It sounds like you're really a stickler for the rules, so I'd just make sure you're following the rules right and don't worry about the others. If they brag and boast about beating you, remind them that as soon as they want to play you straight up and by the rules, then they'll be allowed to brag about winning.

Don't have to. Last time out I shot 1 under and every last stroke was counted.

I can understand. People just refused to own up. Maybe because they feel inferior to the person they're playing with.
