You need to probably start with either an eliptical trainer or fast walking. You want to keep your heart rate at 150-160. If your having problems breathing and it hurts that means your heart rate is too high! if you start out slow and walk longer this will get you prepared to run. Once your heart gets used to walking fast you can begin to run at a light jog and your heart will get accustomed to the light jog and you can go further and further.
Your heart is trying to extract enough oxygen from your lungsand get it to your working muscles but hasn't been conditioned to do it efficiently yet.

There are many good answers here, and they're all good. Starting slowly is the key. Start by walking fast, for about the first 10 minutes walk brisk and get warmed up, then start a slow jog just until you feel out of breath, then slow down to a fast walk and continue this walk run until you're finished with your distance you want to cover. Soon you'll be running more than you're walking. Remember to stretch your hamstrings(back of the leg) and the quads (front) and your calf muscles, and shins after you're finished! Good for you girl, you go!

Of course you get breathless when you run. And yes, you will be able to increase your distance.
What it sounds like is this: either you are running too fast or you are out of shape. I suggest you back off and start with a walking program to establish some cardiovascular base. Also, it is not good on the legs to start running without any previous experience. Start like this: walk an hour every day except 1 then do stretching and upper body toning. Eat fruits & vegetables.
No sugar
No sodas
No candy
No chips
No potatoes
No pasta
No pizza
no corn
no bread
no burgers
no fried foods
Good Luck

Hi Kristen,
I'm so happy you are starting to run! It is a wonderful exercise, and stress reliever.
You are getting out of breath because you are going too fast. Just slow down, and finish your route at a reasonable pace (for you). Speed will come later; you'll work up to it.
Also, when you increase your distance or intensity (such as running hills), make sure you slow down. It takes me longer to run 3 miles then it does to walk 3 miles.
Do you have a good pair of running shoes? If not, go to a running store (not a foot locker) and have them analyze your run and suggest a shoe for you and your needs.
Running is truly an endurance sport. Unlike with walking, you don't just roll out of bed one day and do it. It's something you have to build up to, whether you are in shape or not.

after you jog for a few weeks, you will build up stamina and be able to run longer distances. when starting out, run until you are out of breath and then start walking until you can breath again, and either fast walk the remainder of the way, or alternate walking and jogging. good luck :)

I have the same problem. I went to the doctor and he said I was anemic and that is the reason why I get out of breathe easily. I'm not overweight either. Some people are just not built to run. There are many other excersizes you can do.

Just jog a little way, when it becomes uncomfortable, slow down and walk. When you are comfortable after walking a bit, return to jogging. Do this, over and over, You will soon be jogging more than before and walking less. It is called conditioning.

Yes, that's called endurance.
Start walking, then run a little until you start feeling winded, then walk, run, walk, etc. Soon you will be be running more and walking less. Don't worry if your progress is slow. Start walking/running about a mile and progress from there. Try to icrease your distance and the time you run/walk each day
