Because they don't really know much about it and they have been taught many things that are not true. Most people have the wrong idea of what Catholics believe and don't bother to find out the truth. Many people, especially fundamentalist Christians, have been taught all their lives that the Catholic church is is no longer the "true" Christian church. They believe that they have a monopoly on the truth and that if you don't believe in the same interpretation of scripture as they do then you are wrong. We are all operating on faith. There is no way to "prove" that yours, mine, or theirs is the correct interpretation.
I am an Episcopalian, I have often encountered the same bias toward my denomination as Catholics. I have been told that we don't read and study the Bible, when in actuality, our "daily Bible study" requires reading four different scriptures, often quite long. Thats much more than I was required to do when I was a member of an evangelical denomination. That is just one accusation I have endured. I could name several others which all come down to a difference in scriptural interpretation.
I'm not against Catholics. We all have to realize that the Catholic church kept Christianity alive for hundreds of years and it would be terribly arrogant of anyone to believe that the millions of Christians that lived in died during those hundreds of years were all wrong. There were in fact some wonderful theologians and saints that lived during those centuries. And while there may have been some "wrongs" done centuries ago, The RC church has more than redeemed itself for them. Besides all denominations have skeletons in their closets.

Well, the Catholic Church has killed millions of people during the Crusades, it has tortured and killed people during the Inquisition. It has been an accomplice of the killing of millions of people in the American continent since 1492. It's been an accomplice to every dictatorship in Latin America (none of which would have been even possible, without the support from the Church). It IS still killing girls, by imposing on them the ridiculous idea that they shouldn't abort, which makes abortion illegal (because of the power the Church has), and which makes these girls go to abort in illegal places, under unhealthy conditions. And all of this would have been unnecessary in the first place, if the Catholic Church didn't frown upon condoms, too, to begin with. Otherwise, people would have safe sex (because there's no chance people won't have sex at all, so they don't catch illnesses or get pregnant). And safe sex (which the Catholic Church is in fact against) would save lives from illegal abortions, as well as from AIDS, and many other past and present diseases of sexual transmission. Wouldn't you be against the Catholic Church, too?

loveismymidd? Why do you have love in your name? Millions and millions of people are in the Catholic church. Maybe not on this site. Lots of people on this site might be against the Catholic church but it seems they are against any church. The Catholic church was the first christian church then there were splinter groups that believed differently. It is truly one of the most beautiful and spiritual religions if you really actually get to understand it. It is steeped in art and history. Many people who practice it like nuns and priests give over their whole lives to it. Monks live a simple holy life also. Prayer and meditation are not what we see advertised on TV and so on so it seems very strange but it is peaceful and beautiful. If you ever have read about Mother Teresa - what a huge caring spirit. In giving we receive. Catholics are taught to give. Maybe some don't but I personally know many who do. Walk into a Catholic church and take in the art and the silence, just sit and be. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. peace.

Because catholics substitute man-made traditions for Biblical truth. Confessing to priests was not done in the New Testament at all. Jesus said to confess our sins to God.
Priests think they have some power to forgive sins.......they don't, only God has that power.
They pray to dead people (saints.) That's unbiblical because the Bible says the dead know nothing. They can't answer prayers. Mary can't either. She had no divine power, except that she conceived the Son of God without having ever "known" a man.
The Catholic church has introduced some truly evil things to the world.......modifying pagan holidays to fit into Christianity. Do you think God's really impressed that we claim to worship Him on a day that has been set aside for worship of pagan deities?
I think there are many good Christians within Catholicism, and I think that in the last days they will be called out and seek real Christianity.

Because they have false impressions about what the Church actually teaches. We don't "worship" Mary or the saints. We don't think that the Pope is a substitute for Christ (as was posited by an earlier poster, instead we regard the Pope as more of a steward of the Church on earth until Christ comes again.) The sex scandals were unfortunate, but they are not the fault of the teachings of the Church.
Our church, more than any church I have encountered, values logic and solid reasoning. Evidence of this includes the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, who draws heavily from not only Scripture, but from the writings of the Greek philosopher Aristotle.
Some of our practices may seem strange, to be sure. But St. Paul himself says to hold on to the traditions of our fathers, and that is what we're doing.

I believe it has alot to do with the way it preaches its beliefs quite strongly and they have such an impact on your life.Ask a thirteen year old that gets dragged out of bed every sunday morning to go and play pretend with a largely elderly group!Or a mother of six who isnt allowed to take contraception.its also very interesting when you look at the enormous wealth it has accumulated and isnt redistributed back into society thats without mentioning the sex cases it protects.Funny enough im not catholic and i have never been to church

Their idolatry for one... that is enough.
They claim that man has the right to modify scripture and deny much of the scripture.
They misuse many Biblical terms:
Priest:1Peter 2:9 But God chose you to be his people. You are royal priests. You are a holy nation. You are a people who belong to God. All of this is so that you can sing his praises. He brought you out of darkness into his wonderful light... Every Christian is a priest. We can go directly to God and don't need someone to do it for us.
Saint:Romans 8:27 God, who looks into our hearts, knows the mind of the Spirit. And the Spirit prays for God’s people (saints) just as God wants him to pray.
Bishop:Acts 20:17 From Miletus, Paul sent for the elders of the church at Ephesus...28 “Keep watch over yourselves. Keep watch over all the believers. The Holy Spirit has made you leaders over them (the word here is bishops). Be shepherds of God’s church. He bought it with his own blood....These are clearly the local leaders of local churches, called elders, pastors (also in this passage "shepherds" is from the same Greek word) and bishops ("leaders" as quoted, literally overseers)... These 3 words are the only words in the New Testament which refer to church leadership. All 3 are used in the cited passage and refer to the same people. Nowhere in scripture is there any "chief___" except Christ himself, the chief shepherd.
They claim that the church was built upon Peter himself, claiming that he was the first pope. A true exegesis of that passage finds that the "rock" on which the church was to be built was the confession of Jesus' identity rather than Peter himself. By their own standards he wasn't eligible since he had a mother-in-law... their own, not anything Biblical, since the Bible says nothing about it.
Again, they think man has the right to change scripture.

They're not... Look how many people loved Mother Teresa! Look how many people loved John Paull II. They have a lot of good people there. In fact, there are more Catholics in the world than twice the number of all Protestants. I think the bad rap the Catholics get are mainly from the USA.
