A couple of reasons:

* first of all, there are A LOT of misconceptions about the teachings of the Catholic Church. Many of these misconceptions are very distasteful and if they were true, I wouldn't be Catholic.

* second, the Catholic Church is "counter-culture." Many of its beliefs demand more than general society believes is necessary.

* third, it is very slow to change. While the Church does not change its teachings to the whims of current thought, it is almost resistant to anything new. The strength this gives the Church is that it is very serious and methodical about it's beliefs and is a rock of sorts. The weakness is that because of that rock-like quality, the Church is a bit resistant to the pace of the development of the world and tends to be dragging far behind.

The world changes, but the law of the Catholic Church refuses to change and a lot of people cannot abide by it. And people have built up horrific visions of medieval brutality which has been completely attributed to the Church.

One of your answers appears to think that Catholics pray to Mary and statues. I must say, that's a misconception. I suggest that people with this impression walk up to a Church and ask, instead of making assumptions.

The leaders of the catholic church have a history of evil behavior. Also they teach things that are opposite of the bible.

Good question! They insist that we pray to Mary, not to God; that we pray to statues, not to God; and that we don't use the Bible or believe it's God's word. Quite annoying!
