Some bizarre answers.

Merchant Marine is the term which is used to describe the business of the worlds Merchant Navies.

In other words it is the international trade using ships.

It is a general term and not specific to any one person, ship or navy.

the Merchant Marine, according to a professor that I had that was captain of commercial vessel, is simply those who are trained in moving ships across the water for commerce. They are the Mariners of the merchant class.

A merchant marine is the back bone to the us military mite without them there would not be a military I work for the military sealift command which are employed by the merchant marine and trust me without us there would be no united states

Its not a fighting body, its basically Merchants (traders, business men) who operate over the water.
