Oh, certainly. Anything that our brain takes in will affect us positively or negatively spiritually and/or mentally, at times, even if we try not to allow it to do so. A popular example is cursing. When it comes down to it, cursing is a very disgusting, uncouth thing to do, especially in public. But we hear people do it. How do you think that they may have gotten that way? Aside from social influences, they also had to be watching or listening to things that contained foul language and, because they may have thought of it as "cool" at the time, they decided to pick it up.
Another popular example is music. Some may take violent or sexually-themed lyrics lightly. However, examples in society abound as to the detrimental effects that they wreak on adults. I heard this story of a teenager who used to listen to Satanic rock music that conveyed messages of parricide (that is, killing one's parents) among other evil things. Guess what? He did it. He killed both of his parents, and was sentenced with the death penalty. Before he died, he revealed the paramount influence on his actions: music. He urged others not to make the same mistake that he did, and to be careful about what they listened to. Even though one may argue that it didn't change him spiritually or mentally, think about it. At first, he probably would not have given consideration to the thought of killing his parents, but after listening to the wrong kind of music, he did. You have to think about something before acting on it. Therefore, one can safely conclude that something changed in his spirit or mind before he committed the act. From that example, you can see why parents and activist groups make much of explicit lyrics that promote misogyny and glorify violence and submission to base, evil desires.
The same thing can be found in other media. Watching sexually suggestive programs and looking at pornography have the same effect. Though pornography is a multi-billion dollar industry, it seems those who engage in it don't know that they're playing with fire. Many convicted rapists have reported that they looked at pornography before raping a victim. Furthermore, pornography has been shown to destroy marriages. Men looking at other women and fantasizing about them eventually lost interest in their own wives. Of course, something had to change within the man to lost interest in his wife. That thing could only have been that man's mental or spiritual state.
So, there you are. The wlhole point of this is that what we see and hear have great effects on us all, and that, because of this, we should be careful as to what we watch and listen to.

I think so without a doubt. Today the vogue thing to do is be as disrespectful to everyone you come in contact as you possibly can. The words in a lot of music degrade women and men if they are with these women. The clothes are reveiling and little girls where them younger and younger. they see their favorite singer or rock star and want to be like them. The movies, it is cool to do just about anything and the only thing that is thought of as stupid is if someone has religious values. If you have ever held a newborn baby in your arms and watched that baby grow up. Then watch them put a ciggarette in their mouth or a joint or a beer. or found out that their body was used or they were bullied or beaten up. The pain is unbearable. Yet all this is glorified on TV and movies. Every other show is about murder and how to solve it. Women on TV or movies hardly ever are portrayed with any morals or brains. Sometimes yes but mostly no. The commercials are all about having to have all kinds of things and if you don't then your not good enough. So everyone scramble to work all kinds of jobs to buy the "things" meanwhile who watches the babies-from the news it seems many child molesters or people who really don't care and do horrible things when the parents aren't around. The commercials say "drink and have a great time." has anyone had to live with an alcoholic? It is not much of a party. We are desensitized so we don't even think about it. Now God is a dirty word. Don't preach just let me do what ever I feel like doing at the moment. Even this site- we could have conversations that weren't insulting but the insult is the thing to do. How could all this media that bombards us everyday not have an effect?Peace.

My friend and I were just talking about this today. I think it varies for some people. Music and movies really have no affect on me. Obviously, as a Christian, I'm not going to see something that has an explicit sex scene in it, and I'm not going to listen to music that is sexual in nature because it's not necessary and will leave disgusting images in my mind. However, I watch R-rated movies and I listen to all kinds of movies. One friend I have won't listen to Independent Woman by Destiny's Child because after listening to it she felt like she didn't need her husband and felt like "Yeah, I'm a woman! I don't need anybody!" Music doesn't have that affect on me. So, that's my opinion.

Anything human beings allow themselves to have an interaction with will leave its mark somehow. Look at my profile.. I have a quote from Rush in there from the song Free Will. That song has influenced me profoundly.
