It's a colloquial way of writing "fellows." If you say "fellows" fast with an American accent, it sounds like "fellas."
"Fellows" means "guys," "folks," or "friends," and is more often said to a group a people (rather than about a group of people).
It's a word that is still used, but it's not used very much by younger people.
Also, what kind of slang do you want to know? Are there other words that you've heard that you want to know about?

I do not know why you vote but I vote on the issues and facts and what I personally see as the best candidate on those issues. I voted for Barack Obama not because he is a brilliant debater sometimes he is sometimes not. He reminded me of when we had Presidents who had a bigger plan than driving up the debt, borrowing more money and driving the Country deeper into debtor Nation status. Also when we had Presidents who actually could think and plan beyond one year or one month. I am tired of intelligent design, tired of falling behind other Countries on educational test scores, tired of those who feel life begins at birth monopolizing women's rights without the foggiest notion of what a mess overturning Roe V. Wade would be. But most of all I am tired of hearing John McCain go on and on about being a POW. He has been playing that as all that was necessary for the last 20 years or so. Suffering is terrible and I have regard for that suffering, but I do not vote for someone just because they have suffered. Why I am voting for Barack Obama and not for John McCain is simple. Read Political Positions of Barack Obama and Political positions of John McCain. Most of all, I am not ready to hand a very difficult economy over to someone whose only plan is to keep borrowing money to avoid raising taxes. If this keeps going on you better learn to read Chinese. Because they will own us. Money magazine did an article profiling Millionaires in Cheif. This covers all their assets and how they should invest to get a better return etc. The advice to McCain is to "keep his wife very happy.' In short he is not fiscally aware or responsible. Forget the nice young man because Edwards is a nice young man, I like Bill Richardson, Joe Biden and others. I voted for Obama because he obviously knew what he was doing.
