My son lost a bet with a girl at school and he had to wear a hoodie of a sports team he does not like. He was going to give it back to her but another girl at school said she would give it back to the girl he lost the bet with. That girl never gave the hoodie to the girl like she said she would. We find out now that the girl took the hoodie from her uncle without him knowing it. The girls mom is now threatening my son with contacting a judge. They are holding him responsible for the hoodie b/c he gave it to the other girl who said she'd give it to the first girl. Can my son be held liable in a court of law? This is ridiculous! Over a hoodie! He's only 16 yrs old.

Its a civil matter and not criminal, unless the uncle prosecutes her for the theft and your son for receiving stolen property which I doubt will happen. Its depends on what you feel is right, if your son lost somebodies property then maybe he should pay for it out of his allowance or rake a yard. If you want to go the other way, you can ignore them, i doubt they will sue u for a hoodie. It depends on the life lesson you want to teach your son.

Well first off, this girls mom that said she is going to contact a judge, she is full of it. You dont contact a judge when you are looking to go to court, you file a complaint with the police, so theres a tip she is just pissed. Second, like you said, its a Hoodie! Give me a break, if you dont want to go to court, just buy the girl a new Hoodie, it is partially your sons fault for not giving the Hoodie back to the correct person. Next and finally, Its a HOODIE. You should call the mom that is threatening legal action and tell her to settle down, if she gets that angry over a sweatshirt then wait until she goes to court and gets condemned by a judge because she's a waste of the legals systems resources and time.

The mother cannot call a judge. That just doesn't happen. The most she can do is phone the police, tell them the story, then they will come over and hear your son's side of the story and possibly give some advice of how to handle it.It is not theft.
If this other girl has the hoodie just tell the police where it is and they can go talk to the girl and possible retrieve the hoodie and give it back to the rightful owner.
But in the meantime i hope your son(even tho minor situation)learns how big things can get out of hand.

even though some sweatshirts are kind of spendy, like 50-70 bux, it is ridiculous, it is truly all hear say and nothing will happen in court. if anything the girl who took it from her uncle would be the one charged, your son did not know he was receiving "stolen goods" so he did nothing wrong, also the girl he gave it to because she knew who it belonged to, and can not return it.

I'd say the worst that may happen would be having to pay for the hoodie.

I don't think so. That is pretty dumb. Can't you just tell them you'll buy them a new hoodie and call it even?

it's not worth the judge's tyme. don't worry unless the hoodie was worth $1500 or more ! and i doubt it!

THEY WILL GO AFTER THE GIRL WHO TOOK IT,
GIVE EM HER NAME AND ALL OTHER INFORMATION YOU KNOW ABOUT HER,
AND THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE WHO SEEN HER TAKE IT FROM YOUR SON,
SAYING SHE WOULD GIVE IT BACK TO THE OTHER GIRL,
IF HE CAN GET THAT INFORMATION,
ALL SHOULD BE OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOD-LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
