It could be impacted anal sacs. Some breeds are more inclined to that than others. Could be worms. Could be his butt itches.

Best plan...take him to the vet. Worms and impacted anal sacs can cause serious problems.

I'd tell you how to evacuate his anal sacs, but this is NOT something you want to do. Trust me.

2 possibilities - full anal glands or worms.

Full, inflamed or impacted anal glands are always a possibility on a small breed dog. They have more trouble than the large breeds.

On any size dog, the glands are probably full and he is trying to release them. You hope that he doesn't succeed on your carpet as this is very strong smelling stuff.

If you want, you can do this yourself or take him to a dog groomer or vet.

To do yourself - outside or in the bathtub
1) Grab dog by the base of the tail, hold tail vertical
2) Place one finger on each side of dog's rectum, press your fingers in and together. You should feel something like a grape (depends on size of dog)
3)press your fingers together firmly (squeeze the grape). You should see some yellowish/brownish fluid coming out of the rectum. Wash area and hands thoroughly, this stuff smells bad.
4)If nothing is released or this is painful for the dog, see your vet.

Expressing once a month is generally plenty to keep things right.

Dont listen to any of them!!! Calm down relax. Your dog probably got a little piece of poo stuck on his butt and that really bothers them so they scoot their butts around trying to get it out. Just look at the butt get a pair of scissors and cut the poo away it will be smelly but ur dog should stop scooting.

I read in a dog magazine so I am pretty sure that they scoot their butts because of worms!

it can mean a few things...first, dogs sometimes do that after going to the toilet to "wipe" themselves, think of the grass as you would toilet paper to humans. or it could be something more serious, like intestinal worm infestation that causes itch. your dog should be dewormed regularly, talk to your vet about a regular deworming schedule, it is pretty inexpensive but very important to your dog's health.

Usually means impacted anal glands. Vets and groomers can release them. I request it done when I take my dogs in for grooming. It is very common in small dogs.

Tape worms or other worms in his system. Impacted anal glands. Those are things that cause cats to do this.
