Cybeq says it well - a spiritual bath to make you soul clean and pure. I would also add, however, that it represents an initiation; it's a way of welcoming the child into the Church. Everyone goes to watch and take part and celebrate that the baby has now become part of the Church 'family.'

I take it you are not talking about your child's Baptism, because if you were they would have to have a good understanding of it, but if you are talking to a small child it , My Children knew it was for the Cleansing of Sins or in the case of a child Jesus forgiveness for our mistakes..
I had Five children they were all baptized before age 14, and later one chose to do it over, and I think if that is what they want that is OK, Bless you.& your Child.

Baptism is a public declaration that you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior. You are showing everyone that you have accepted Jesus into your heart. That is what Baptism is. If you are trying to explain the Baptism of an infant, then I'm at a loss as to what to say. But according to the Bible, it's a public declaration of your faith.

The meaning of baptism as I know it:

Baptism

Jesus Christ taught that we must be baptized by immersion. He set the example Himself by being baptized to “fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15).

We are baptized for the remission of sins. (Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16). We are also baptized to become members of the Church of Jesus Christ, and to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5).

Through the ordinance of baptism, we make a promise, called a covenant, with God. We promise to accept Christ, to become His followers, and to keep His commandments to the end of our lives. In return, our Heavenly Father promises to forgive our sins and let us return to live with Him, provided we keep our covenants.

Now, just make that into children's understanding and there ya go.

It is Jesus giving you a bath. If you promise to love God through inviting Jesus into your heart and follow Jesus' teachings, the pastor applies water (emersion, pouring or sprinkling depending on denomination) and Jesus applies the Holy Spirit, kind of a soap which cleanses your soul so Jesus can live inside of you.

Tell him or her it is a sign of your love for God, and a gift of love you can give God.
It means that you want God in your life. That Jesus did it himself because it is a special thing to do.
If the child is a little older you can give a little theology that it brings the Spirit of God into your heart. And Jesus asked us to do it.

Baptism is kind of like Jesus dying, being buried, and rising again. We die to our sins, and rise up out of the water forgiven by God.

Tell your child it is something that people do to show their love to God. When your child is older you can add to that.

Tell them it's like a bath for your soul. It represents spiritual cleanliness and rebirth.
