depends on which state (disorderly conduct law) in Ohio if you use vulgar, course language that tends to offend a person you could be cited.(cause annoyance, alarm or inconvenience) Usually a minor misdemeanor ($100 ticket)unless u will not stop after the nice cop told you to. The law is open for a lot of discretion. But most police Officers know the courts will accept this when the language is extreme or repetitious and or likely to cause a physical harm to persons or property. Most states use this concept.
The answer from the Officer in Texas is wrong about Officers being Offended.
The United States Supreme Court has ruled that Police Officers can NOT be offended like the members of the public can. However it is no advantage to a person do this, because a Police Officer has wide discretion in decision making and usually will not give a "break" or other consideration after being insulted. (would you?) however it is illegal to threaten a police Officer with physical harm.

I might be now that we live in the post 9/11 world. The Constitutional protections of speech are on the way out if you don't stand up for them. If you are in a public space you should be free to speak as you wish. However using profanity in areas with a large number of children and parents could land you in a fight with some angry fathers you are still free to do so. So when the police show up to haul you off remember those peace officers are violating their right to defend your right to speak.

yes, it is in many places, it can be either a state law or a city law. When we were in Atlanta we seldom used it, but did once in a while if someone was distrubing the peace but no one wanted to sign a complaint against them, or if they had some of that music with curse words blasting, we used the law to take thier music or impound thier player if it was bothering some other city event. ( they would get their equipment back, but it stoped the problem short term)

It depends on the state and locality. In Texas, it is illegal to use profane or abusive language in public if the language would tend to incite a breach of the peace by its utterance. In layman's terms, it is illegal to curse if it would get someone mad enough to want to fight you.
And the previous poster was very wrong, at least for Texas. If he calls me a pig, it comes under the same abusive language law posted below, and I will arrest him for it. Since it tends to get me mad, which means it is provoking a breach of the peace, it is illegal. I won't hit him because I can keep my temper as a professional police officer, but I can and will arrest for it.

Many local laws baning cursing were passed decades ago. Some are still 'on the books'. Few are enforced in the US.

loose speech has a boundary, extremely while there are rules that look after each and each citizen. you are able to desire to be charged with a disorderly habit by applying applying profane or abusive language or gestures which includes giving some the promptly finger.

It may be against the law depending on where you are located, how loud the individual is, and how harrassing the individual is. He/She could be cited for Disturbing the Peace.

No it's freedom of speech. You can even call a cop a pig (or any other obscene name lol) and they can't do anything about it except yell back at you!
