No one here has the correct answer. The DoD regulation that used to allow all members of the Armed Forces to drink was changed in 1985, limiting the drinking age to correspond to the state law of the military installation of the state in which it resides.
Later, the M.A.D.D. organization got Congress to pass a law that required all states to boost their minimum drinking age from 18 to 21, or the Feds would withhold money to the states for roads, etc. This effectively ended persons in the military from drinking if they were under 18.
Besides, many teens (and some otherwise older adults) aren't responsible enough to know when they've had enough. The military saw an increase in Motor Vehicle Accident deaths from under 21's, in the years preceding the policy, and decided it was good to change.

Age old question. There are several bases around the world who will serve you a beer or a drink if you have a military ID. These are not bars or clubs off base. Those bars have to follow the rules of the state they are in. On base, though, it is up to the commander, and I have been on bases where if you in the military, you will be served. Hope that helps.

If you are 18, in the military, and on the base, you can legally drink alcohol. Military posts are covered by Federal law. The 21 year old laws are state laws.

It’s real simple. By putting a three-year gap between the eligible age for military enlistment and the permissible age for drinking, you ensure an army that is sober enough to kill effectively for the three years that is required of you in your tour of duty. Therefore you become the most efficient pawn for the entirety of the three years you are enslaved to them.
The logic then proceeds to suggest that after the three years, they allow you to drink in order to numb the pain of wasting your life in the military, when you could have gone to college or a technical school to make something of themselves, as opposed to getting your limbs shot off for a cause that has nothing to do with the patriotic sentiment of preserving freedom.

Because your typical 18 year old is not responsible enough to handle alcohol.
