Because most cats like to sleep on their owners chest that's where that story comes from. I tell my friends that have infant baby's to be more careful. I've had cats all my life and have had them sleep close up to my face. I never felt any sort of suffocation. But i would be concerned if an animal is sleeping with a young baby. My grandmother said the same thing. LOL.
Anyhow i'm still breathing after owning 20 cats since the age of 14.
In my 40's now.

Cat Suffocating

Yes. Cats are more active at night than during the day. The reason for this is because they will suck out your life force a little each day. When they have taken all that they can take from you, they will kill you by depriving you of oxygen. Cats are planning to take over the world. Ever see the movie Cats and Dogs? Well I heard that it's not at all a fictional story, but a documentary made by the good dogs of this world to expose the truth.

Many stories were told about cats suffocating new born babies because they were jealous of a new born in the house. Never have I heard of a cat suffocating a human.

No. It's an old wives' tale. It was that a cat would suffocate a sleeping baby. I think it has to do with cats seeking warmth and what's warmer than a baby. However my cat has been around babies and (if/when they are still) there is no way he could suffocate one. Totally false.

No, it is not true. I have nine cats and none have ever tried to suffocate my husband, children or myself. Cats do like to cuddle up with you, and they like to be warm, but they won't sit on your face anymore than a dog would.

YES

Never, ever go to sleep again.
If you do - your cat will kill you.

That soft, cuddly purry thing is out to get you.
It sits on your lap waiting to be stroked.
This makes you sleepy.
It does this because it wants to kill you.

So, turn your TV and radio on to full volume. That will keep you awake.

Never, ever go to sleep again.
You have been warned.

Cats like to cuddle. In theory, they could cuddle a baby and sufficate it (much like it could sufficate in its blankets which is why you are warned to put a baby on his back w/o pillows, extra blankets).

But they do not intend to sufficate you -- they only have warmth and cuddles on their minds!
