Poverty is not self-denial, not even close.

Anyplace will do. Of course the more you have to spend to stay alive like paying the rent or mortgage the more you are going to have to involve yourself in the world of commerce. But that doesn't mean you can't meditate whereever you are and whatever you are doing. Wherever you live you can meditate. Meditation is a personal thing. You can find a quiet place anywhere and do it. At home or in a park or in a museum, for instance. Anyplace that doesn't have a museum is rural enough to have plenty of out of the way spots to choose from.
As for self denial, that's easy enough. Anyplace with poverty has people who are living without. As long as you are choosing to live without then you, too, can live a life with few material possessions or expensive extras. If you need a quiet lake and a meadow that you've purchased in order to live a life of meditation and self denial then I think you've missed the point.
