"In order to raise HDL cholesterol levels, researchers recommend regular exercise, quitting smoking, gaining control of your weight, consuming low to moderate levels of alcohol, and eating a diet low in saturated fat and rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Vitamin B3 is also an effective method of raising good cholesterol levels." http://www.hopkinsbayview.org/healthcarenews05/05092203.html

Bad habits like not exercising enough, poor eating habits and smoking lower HDL. There are also indications that drinking too much alcohol can lower it, but to what extent is still not certain. There are no obvious symptoms of low HDL other than having a heart attack or stroke.

The good cholesterol is HDL (high-density lipoprotein), the bad one is LDL (Low-density lipoprotein).
