It depends on what you want too:
if you like to visit historical and romantic places, nice architecture, you know french, and want to deal with cloudy days and rude people that only speak their languages, then go to France.
if you want fun, sun, beaches, historical and romantic places :), architecture, mountains and so many other great things, beautiful and nice people (they smile at least), people that allow you to be a "foreigner", great food and amazing wine, then choose Italy...
I would go for Italy, I've seen both, guess what I loved more?

German guy answering here and I say ITALY. Way more interesting place, certainly not as pretentious. Besides whoever heard of a cool French car (Italy has Lamborghini and Ferrari!) although the Citroen DS is a classic.

I certainly would like to visit both... if I had to choose which to visit first, I'd probably go with Italy. This is really a tough choice... I guess I lean toward Italy because it has more shoreline.

You can't go wrong with either.
However I would choose Italy - Rome, Venice, Florence are all amazing.
