It is hard and that is why they say if you can make it here you can make it anywhere.

Try www.sublet.com for cheap places to stay. Also, I disagree with the information you've been given about jobs. I think jobs are in abundance here and pay much better than anywhere else, so the cost of living here is offset by a better salary. Try temp agencies, and service-type jobs. You might want to get your bartending license, since those jobs can pay well.

Mostly everyone has moved here from another state... and somehow they survive... well I suppose a lot of them don't... I don't really know since I grew up here. If you are coming here to be a student, I'd suggest working for your university or college, finding some sort of on-campus job or jobs that pay decently and won't interfere too much in your studies. You could find some sitting-at-a-desk type job where you can study and get paid.

Good luck!

You'll have to find roommates! Young people don't usually live alone in NY, not even associates at investment banks and big law firms. Plus, it's nice to regularly see someone familiar in an unfamiliar city. If you're still in school, you'll have to try to get a part time job in a store that supplies your needs: a healthy grocery store, or a restaurant (very competitive area, though, because sometimes tips can double a salary), drugstore, book store or clothing store. This way, you'll get a discount on your purchases (and in the case of restaurants, a daily free meal).

uhhh…i regret not going to a school there although I had the chance but I chose another location. It is an amazing city and yes you can make it there even if you are a student. You don’t have to eat at fancy restaurants nor take the cabs…. and you don’t have to live at brooklyn heights either! millions of things to see and do so you’ll never get bored to death like in other states…. and you can easily find a job there.

your credit cards go up! and you just have to search for the cheaper things. Don't have a car, buy clothes at old navy, century 21, take the subway to target in brooklyn. don't take cabs - jsut the bus and subway and find cheap food places which means eating a lot of pizza!

it's not that much more expensive than living in other large cities. you have to expect it. but once you are done school if you stay in ny, you'll make enough to even it all out. i personally could never live in ny because it's too congested for me, and i'm from philadelphia. i prefer to not have neighbors. lol.
