for some people, the 3 go together - and, if they didn't curse and smoke before, the drink provides the rationalization and/or explanation and/or defense for participating in the other 2!

like my dad says... "alcohol is liquid courage".
it gives people the courage to do things that they normally wouldn't do... and it gives them the excuse for it.
