I believe we are now allowing more immigrants into the country (than any other eu nation) to make up for;-
(dont laugh think about it, if thinking does not work get stoned you will see my point!!)
the crusades
the empire (and subsequent withdrawl and collapse of dependent nations )
The slave trade.

We have a guilt complex (as a nation) because of these things and are now trying to make up for it through our ludicrous asylum and imigration policy. What other country would allow somebody illegal acsess through their borders not grant them leave to stay and then pay for them to stay whilst the Solicitors (which we also pay for) attempt to change the decision makers mind????

GUILT ITS GUILT I TELL YOU!!!!

I for one was not party to the slave trade, did not attempt to convert any non-christians and have never tried to collonise parts of the world. I dont want to pay for this anymore, i cant afford to work 1 week in 4 for free.

Phew rant over

carry on

The real problem is Entitlement. Unfortunately, in this country, people that have influence are being seduced by the less afluent minorities and immigrants that perpetuate a society of "give me". The constant drone of "I have suffered, take care of me" is so pervasive, it's impossible to get away from. Every individual has the right to be free and have equal opportunity. Every individual does not have the right to be taken care of simply because they are less fortunate than others. Coming to this country is the great equalizer. Anything after that 'you' should EARN on your own.

I can only agree. It might work now, but any downturn in the UK economy will cause real pressure on wages and huge social tensions. We are letting hundreds of thousands of people into this country who are happy to be earning a few pounds a day. Just wait until next year, when Bulgaria and Romania join the EU and come flooding here in their millions. A fiver a day will be a fortune to them.

Lets not forget the good we gave to the world, India would not have the infrastructure it has today if it wasnt for us - Colonisation built their railways and business model. Before we arrived it was a complete slum.

Its easy to use the negatives of our history against us but anyone with half a brain can see the positives we gave the world.

Look at Africa now, can you honestly say that handing it over to the African people has improved their quality of life? - is it better now than it was then? Why is South Africa the most successful african nation? and who is it ruled by? - why is Nigeria so poor and fighting pointless wars despite having the richest natural resources of the continent?

Ofcourse its our (Brits) fault isnt it? - Easier to blame someone else for your problems rather than admit your own mistakes.

the uk has always done very well out of its immigrant populations who often arrive with skills difficult to find in an increasingly poorly educated and attitude-riven england, or else are willing to work for wages well below what our molly-coddled invalidity benefitnauts consider their due.

immigrants - even illegal ones - have at least made the effort to get here. the problem with this country is the folk that never make any kind of an effort at all.

That's partly true. Certainly our interference in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe has come back to haunt us. But we've always been a nation of immigrants, from the Anglo-Saxons to the Romans, Danes, French and more lately, further afield.

It certainly would appear so, yes.

However, we should not have [a guilt complex.]

So that requires an explanation of the difference.

- Which is very complex and drawn out, but essentially - boils down to our government being too weak spined to put their foot down and prevent such ease of access (and privelage taking) to ilegal immigrants, and that we don't even afford those born in this country.

Regarding America, we already take over a million every year legally, and have 12 to 20 million here illegally with thousands more arriving every day.

We have expiated our guilt, thanks.

Good luck with yours.

I doubt that guilt has anything to do with it really. If it did, Britain would be out of other places like Northern Ireland & it's other "colonies".
