i just dont get why missionaries think they can go into a jungle village and convert anyone they want.if you want to go to heaven thats great but if a village asks you to leave and you dont your just forcing religion on them. if someone from that village aproaches you personally then thats fine but otherwise if your asked to leave you hav no business there.

Neither a missionary nor a christian. But in the story of Noah didn't he proselytize and no one believed. So should he have left? Mind you he preached for almost a 1000 yrs.

Most Christian missionaries do not "force" their religion on people. They certainly believe what they preach and openly tell others. The people who hear are free to believe or disbelieve and walk away, no harm done. It is rare an ENTIRE village wants someone to leave; its usually just a few. There have been the sad cases in the past of "convert or die", but that is not how the Christian God wants conversion--He wants it from the heart. Most missionaries know this and would never try to "force" someone. They may be persuasive, but leave the decision up to the person they talk to.

Well, part of being a christian is spreading the word about christianity.....and no one is "forcing" anyone to convert.....you can't "force" someone to believe something. If they feel that they should, then I'm sure that is what they do. If not, then the missionaries may give it one last go and then leave and try elsewhere. They don't feel that everyone "wants" to convert, but as a missionary, it is their "mission" to spread the word of Jesus. If you have a problem with this, why don't you go out and see how many of the villages actually mind missionary visits. Many missionaries also bring other valuables and start schools and educate them on other things besides religion. It's not just one big holy-roller event.

Usually missionaries are not there to "force" people to believe, they are there to inform and hopefully lead people into the belief in whatever they are preaching. There is a difference. The people have a choice, they listen and then they decide. Missionaries do not put a gun to any ones head and say "believe, convert or else." They do it in a manner that people come of their own freewill.

Originally, as in hundreds of years ago christians believed that the end of days could not come until the entire world had been exposed to Jesus' teachings. Many saw the "discovery" of the Americas to be a sign of the apocolypse. This is why missions started, to spread the teachings and hurry up judgment day.

Because their religions teach them that in order to be good people they have to go around and teach the ignorant about the religion and try to "show them the way". They tend to take requests for them to leave as a sign that they are "getting through to the poor lost souls".

--used to hang out with people who were missionaries, waaaayyyy back when I was Christian

Missionaries are on a mission. They are convinced that their job is to get everyone to convert to their religion. They claim that one of the rules of their religion is to "save" nonbelievers.

The ones that bother me the most are the ones who run orphanages. It's great to take care of the children and keep them healthy and off the streets, but then they brainwash the kids with religion.

The idea of seeking new members of any church has gone on for decades. People desire for others to share the joys of their faith, many times trying to sell the idea of people who have no interest. People on missions want to "save" the person by having them join their church.

I agree the intrusion is generally not welcomed and that many cultures will be courteous and listen. But the old adage of once you get your foot in the door seems to apply. Trying to say no is hard for most people, especially to a very assertive person.

I have no problems when someone approaches my door. After I find out what their mission is/what they want to "sell", I say no thank you and shut the door.

Those missionaries believe in their hearts that they are right, and that God will reward them for being devoted to the "lost cause" of converting resistant heathens. They honestly believe that if they just push harder, they will convert people. Also, they feel that it will bring them closer to God themselves if they don't give up, even if they never succeed.
